Bad holiday memories for old Hollywood stars

In the Christmas Season Dumps?
Think everyone has a better holiday than you?

The holidays where they felt as cuddly as a cactus or as charming as an eel.
1977 London

When their whole lives seemed like one big bad banana with a greasy black peel. Remembering a few of the miserable, the ill, the hurt and tough times around Christmas and New Year's -- for old Hollywood actors and actresses.

Some of the older newspapers and the oldest film magazines and featured stories by celebrities where they recounted their worst holiday memories. "One Christmas was little less than terror for poor me," said Mary Pickford. The stars' most miserable Christmases. "My awfullest Christmas eve," by Maurice Costello."

We're not the only ones who have Blue Christmases.
Here are some items from life-changing situations to the simply absurd. Some are good reminders for us to think about what's really important and to be safe this time of year and all year.

Jim and Marilyn recall a miserable Christmas, 1945

After having been in a minor car accident just before Christmas 1945, young Norma Jean Dougherty got a call from a modeling agency. Her marriage to husband, James 'Jim' Dougherty, was strained. Norma, later better known as Marilyn Monroe told a magazine in 1952.

It would be "a nice paying job up in the mountains to be taken with some pictures in the snow. Jim wanted her to cancel so the family could be together on Christmas Day.

"Marilyn pointed out that if she refused to go, she'd not only lose the job but others. It was a part of what you had to put up with in the modeling profession. Anyway he could come along with her."

He was stubborn. He felt that he'd look silly tracking along after her and she

didn't see it that way. They stayed home. That was the most miserable Christmas either of them every spent.

The couple divorced September 1946. Norma Jean began using the name Marilyn Monroe in 1946.
The article isn't entirely clear if they're referring back to Christmas 1944 or 1945.

Christmas 1937 actress Carole Lombard will not issue statements about Clark Gable or talk about him in any way. A reporter wonders if their relationship has cooled off?

"Joel McCrea's ambitions suffered a rude blow when he received a pair of rainbow hued garters from a farmer boy in North Carolina with the following note. 'I saw your picture in a movie magazine. Your socks were hanging down over your shoe tops. You looked like a big hick. Here's a pair of garters. Please send me an autographed photograph.'"
Oh the fans. Holiday-time 1933.

Christmas 1955: Irene Dunne "fell in her home Friday and had to eat her Christmas dinner from a wheelchair. She said she feared at first she had seriously injured her hip but x-rays showed no broken bones."

In 1964, Alfred Hitchcock has a select group of friends over for one of his Blue Food Christmas Dinner Parties. While it is memorable, two of his guests, Cary Grant and Dyan Cannon suffer the gastrointestinal after-effects once they arrive home after the party.

By the way, years ago we took care of a baby who'd recently eaten a piece of Sesame Street Cookie Monster themed cake, with blue colored frosting. You need to warn babysitters and caregivers about these things so no one worries about how everything, um, comes out in the end. :-)

"Jurors voting for acquittal said they had a reasonable doubt of the state's charge that Berkeley was intoxicated and driving recklessly when his automobile crashed into two other machines September 8 killing three persons."

The director will have another trial with a deadlocked jury. The case will dismissed later in 1936.

The Case of Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle
In the news over
Christmas-New Years 1922/23

In 1921-1922 Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle became the center of one of the first big Hollywood scandals when aspiring actress Virginia Rappe became ill and died after a party where she and Arbuckle had spent a time alone in a room. A medical examination found no evidence of sexual assault. Her autopsy concluded that "there were no marks of violence on the body, no signs that the girl had been attacked in any way." The trial and story filled with fact, hearsay and legend is famous to this day. A link to a book is below.

Roscoe Arbuckle 1919
Christmas-New Years 1922/23 Will Hays, presiding over the MPPDA, Motion Pictures Producers and Distributors of America Hollywood's censor board, makes statements about Fatty Arbuckle, determining his fate in the industry.

"Every man in the right way and at the proper time is entitled to make good. It is apparent that Roscoe Arbuckle's conduct since his trouble merits that chance.

"So far as I am concerned there will be no suggestion now that he should not have his opportunity to go to work in his profession. In our effort to develop a complete co-operation and confidence within the industry I hope we can start the New Year with no yesterdays. Live and Let live is not enough; we will try to live and help live." December 20, 1922

"Arbuckle will not appear again on screen, but becomes director of comedies."
-- January 30, 1923 headline

Roscoe Arbuckle will not appear again on screen. He will become a director but his acting days are over. The final stage in the so-called Arbuckle case was reached today when Mr. Arbuckle himself issued a statement which read as follows:

"I signed to day a contract with Reel Comedies, Inc to direct comedies. I am done with acting. My great ambition is to make the world laugh and I can do this best as a director of comedies. This is my chance to make good in the right way and in the business that I know and love and in a way that should meet the approval of all. I will start work at once and from now on you will not see or hear from me except through the comedies that I direct."

The Twelve Pains at Christmas

Home and Work Accidents

These may be on the rise due to the excitement of the season, parties and decorations. In the old days more candles were used.

The films of actress Bodil Rosing include Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, You Can't Take it with You and It Must Be Love.

"Goodness, I've certainly known tragedy and hard sailing,"  Rosing said in an interview. "When my youngest girl was six her dress caught fire from a Christmas tree. She was burned terribly."

In 1938, Bette Davis told the story of being burned by candles at Christmastime when she was a little girl. At ten years old, Bette Davis was sent to a boarding school.

"My first year at school was marred by an accident which nearly cost me my life. It was at Christmas time and I was proudly playing my first acting part, that of Santa Claus in a Christmas tree ceremony. My costume caught fire from a match I had struck to light the candles and before they could put out the flames my whiskers were ablaze with the result that my face was severely burned.

"I was sent home to mother and for two weeks she nursed me day and night, applying wet pads to my face every 15 minutes, getting what sleep she could between applications. The doctor the teachers and my mother all thought I would be scarred for life.

"I am sure if were not for the heroic treatment my mother gave me with practically no sleep for herself the entire course of my life might have been changed.

"While Mrs. Bing Crosby was taking down the Christmas tree, a short circuit set fire to the tree, curtains, rugs ... and the house. Bing's brothers, Larry and Bob, rescued his wardrobe of 100 suits, although some were soaked and smoke damaged. In one pair of black and white sport shoes, Bing found two thousand dollars in greenbacks, unscathed.  Who said that women and their teacups are the only amateur bankers?

"Timmy, the children's pet cocker spaniel was suffocated, but Big Boy the Great Dane was saved. The whole family was taken in by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hope until Bing bought a house in Holmby Hills. Considering the current income taxes and salary ceiling, Bing's loss was a severe jolt but do you know what he said? 'I'm lucky, Dixie and the boys are safe.'"
-- 1942 article

There was so much fear of kidnapping in the 1930s. When young "Jane Withers gayly waved from the Christmas float, while behind Santa Claus hid her bodyguard." The article said that some Hollywood children, both performer and the children of actors, directors, etc were terrified.

End-of-year, Early-year Accidents and Illnesses
Trouble and Worries. Most of these had nothing (to my knowledge) to do with the holidays.

Gracie Allen is an absolute favorite of mine. The year of her birth of has always been disputed 1895, 1896, 1902 or 1906? The internet probably has added some more years to the mix. Her crypt says 1902 and that year was given by her husband, George Burns. Regardless, I almost always see her birth date as July 26th.

The story has always been that this event happened when Gracie was a toddler, just 18 months old so it would have been the end of the year around December. She reached up to the stove and pulled down a pot of boiling water. Her left arm was badly scalded to the point that they worried they would have to amputate her arm. They were able to save the arm but she was scarred for the rest of her life.

Gracie always wore at least 3/4-length sleeves to cover the scars. George Burns said that of course he saw her arm but also his children saw her bare arms when she went swimming for instance, but that was it.

File this one under "It helped to have a really strong husband...."
December 28 1932: Mary Pickford was knocked unconscious when a heavy studio lamp fell on her. Douglas Fairbanks, her husband lifted the lamp off of her as she lay prostrate. A physician was summoned to reviver her. Miss Pickford later resumed her role and it was announced that she was not hurt.

Some good news; December 1930: Dolores Del Rio is pronounced out of danger by the doctors. She had been in bed ever since a week after her wedding that past August to Cedric Gibbons suffering from a severe form of kidney trouble. She had been in danger of death for several weeks.

December 27, 1936, something supposedly overheard at a Hollywood gathering. "Just think I'll soon be 33 years old groaned Cary Grant at a recent party. Don't worry soothed Bob Riskin. In nine years you'll be able to play Gable parts." Riskin was a playwright and screenwriter. He wrote the screenplay for the 1934 Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert classic It Happened One Night.

Hoping everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.

Errol Flynn Custom Tights Record Seams

Was he tight? How tight is too tight?
The question of tights and Dressing a Hollywood Actor

To Rosalind Russell as ex-wife Hildy: "I still claim I was tight the night I proposed to you. If you had been a gentleman, you would have forgotten all about it. But not you!"
-- Cary Grant, His Girl Friday 1940

Adventures of Don Juan
Errol Flynn Photo
It's December 1947 and Errol Flynn has just popped a new record in the annals of film history. This is part of my series on clothes, costume and vintage film actors.

The record? He's busted the seams on more pairs of tights than any other actor in motion pictures. Three hundred twenty-four pairs Errol has reduced to shreds and this movie isn't even over yet.

When Mr. Flynn retired to his dressing room to change his pants they cornered the guy who gets "the headaches from Errol's record," Willys of Hollywood.

"His main business is turning out stockings, padded and plain, for movie queens. He also makes tights. But after the affair of the popped seams, he's liable to stick to thigh high socks."

Errol Flynn's Measurements
"'First I measured Mr. Flynn,' began the tights man. 'He has the best male shape in town. Ankle 9 1/2. Calf 13 1/2. Thigh 20 1/2. Waist 32. Hips 38. Most actors have knobby legs. But Mr. Flynn's are beautiful.'

The Adventure of Don Juan
film clip with subtitles

"Willys for ten days fixed the machines at his shop so they'd knit tights to exactly
fit Mr. Flynn. The Willys of Hollywood establishment then paused all other work while the machines clacked out 324 pairs of fancy silk tights.

"'He has 27 changes of costume,' explained Willys. 'I made 12 pairs for each change, so he'd have plenty for rehearsal and plenty for takes.'

"They were different colors, too. The movie Warners' The Adventure of Don Juan, is in Technicolor. But the cameraman didn't like the colors of the tights. So the studio dyed them over again. The seams, shuddered, Willys, came out white. The Adventures of Don Juan DVD/Streaming.

"'They used silk dye,' he snapped. 'The seams were sewn with nylon thread.
Janet Blair

The picture was held up until I got out there to see what was the matter.'

"Willys re-dyed the pants with nylon dye. At last the picture was rolling with Flynn be-tighted in one color. But Flynn was rolling too, his tights.

"'He wanted his tights very tight,' sighed their maker. 'Every time he put them on he pulled and rolled them around his waist. Like the way women roll stockings that are baggy.'

"This, he added causes runs to pop in Mr. Flynn's silk tights. He also came apart when he twice ran onto the sharp point of somebody's sword.

"Errol as the nimble Don Juan, was called upon to leap out of beds, across castle moats, over walls and under cover. Flynn further did a great deal of bending over.

Errol Flynn Outtakes, Bloopers

Outtakes from the movie Robin Hood 1938

Pants Part Often

"This often left Mr. Flynn with parted pants and the picture would have to wait while he rushed to his dressing room and wriggled into new tights. He could scarcely wear mended ones. So the old pairs were exiled into dust rags for the studio cleaning women.

"Errol currently is working on other scenes while Mr. Willys whips out more tights.

"'I made tights for circus performers, Broadway actors and ballet dancers in New York before I came to Hollywood,' Willys told us.

"'The first picture actor who wore my tights was John Barrymore. I padded the legs because his were so skinny.'

"'I made a $3,500 pair of sequined tights for Alice Faye to wear in In Old Chicago, and gold ones for Marlene Dietrich. And tights for Cary Grant, Melvyn Douglas, Jack Benny and Vic Mature. All custom made so they don't wrinkle.

"'But I never made so many as I did for Mr. Flynn. He sure wore those out.'"
Newspaper wire service article December 1947

The Adventures of Don Juan was released in the United States on December first, 1948. Wonder how Flynn would've done with a Star Wars lightsaber?

"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances...." So says Jaques in Shakespeare's As You Like It. Innumerable male actors, dancers and other performers have worn tights on stage and in film over the years.

Question: Who remembers films that featured a be-tighted Cary Grant, Melvyn Douglas, Jack Benny and/or Victor Mature??

The story makes me think of a favorite show, Project Runway. Tim Gunn would say, "Make it work," and that's what they had to do.

Great tip about dying clothes: Find out if the thread used is the same material as the fabric overall. You don't want white seams.

Willys has a long history with many films, creating the best for Hollywood stars and other dignitaries. They prepared the stockings worn by Princess Elizabeth for her wedding. Seed pearls were sewn on by hand. The stockings were "gossamer sheer nylon, fragile."

It was a hush-hush job. The stockings were seamless so the princess wouldn't need to worry if her seams were straight as she heads to the altar.

The design included a cascade of tiny seed pearls sprinkling down the ankles. He said, "It was like gluing gems onto cobwebs, but the results were worth it."

Shop, Wrap with Old Hollywood Stars

They're getting ready for Christmas

Claire Windsor suggests
we shop early for Christmas
"The first local indication that the big day is nigh is the physical change in Hollywood Blvd. From La Brea to Vine on either side of the street each block is decorated with six huge lighted Christmas trees.

"From December tenth through January first the famous street is not known as Hollywood Blvd. To everyone in southern California it is known as Santa Claus Lane."

"The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is going to spend over twenty thousand dollars in decorating the streets alone. They are having specially designed Christmas trees constructed to fit around the electroliers on Hollywood Boulevard. These will make the boulevard look like one long row of old fashioned Christmas trees with a golden glow in their center."

It's the late 1920s and early-mid 1930s. What is (or would have been) on your shopping list?

Christmas Shopping with stars from Hollywood's Golden Age:

"I believe it is this hectic last-minute rush that is responsible for so many of the useless presents from which we all suffer at this season of the year!

"A gift that is not wanted and that is no earthly good to the recipient is worse than no gift at all because after all, it is the thought behind that matters and it is a poor compliment to a friend if we don't take the trouble to find out what he or she would most appreciate." ...

"Pretty blouses and undies always make acceptable gifts and here the individual tastes of those who are to receive them should be carefully studied. Favorite colours should be remembered as well as the style of the garment. There is no sense in giving a pair of pyjamas however pretty to the girl who you know prefers to wear a nightie."
-- Ruth Roland, 1925

Example of an unfortunate gift: The previous tenants who lived at the home of Madge Evans had left a young alligator in the pool. "It was cute and we thought it an added attraction, but presently it began to grow and we had a terrible time getting it out of the pool. I lost my enthusiasm for it when it threatened to bite the dogs. I have four dogs, you know."

"Shirley Temple is doing her shopping by telephone this year. Last year she and her mother ventured out on one trip because she longed to see Santa Claus. As soon as she entered the toy dept of the store there was a shout from a group of youngsters who noticed her and Santa was forgotten.

"Shirley had to get down behind a counter until the excitement died down."  Maybe Santa will visit the studio sometime for the children who work in the movies? (1937)

The average star sends out anywhere from 500 to 1,500 Christmas cards. They prepare their lists carefully. They forget no one on the set or the lot whom they feel should be remembered. Hairdressers, cameramen, police, prop men, grips, electricians, the man who parks their motor car, the gate man, publicity boys, all receive appropriate gifts.

Hollywood has become far more practical minded in the past few years. Celebrities also make donations to charitable causes particularly at Christmastime.

Jean Harlow has already presented Powell with a set of handkerchiefs
Here they're on the set of Libeled Lady
Jean Harlow, now a brownette, has all her personal gifts made to order from her own design. Jean is giving Bill Powell a silk scarf on which she has embroidered his initials.

In the movie Desk Set, Katharine Hepburn's character buys a bathrobe and embroiders her boyfriend's initials on it. Norma Shearer will make the rounds of several of the smaller shops. Sometimes custom items take a little longer. Regardless when ordering anything, check to see what information they need and when it's supposed to be ready.

Joan Crawford will go to a department store and take a private room. With a salesgirl, the same one now for four years, she will go over a previously made list. Different varieties of articles Joan has listed will be assembled, from which Joan makes her choice.
Carmel Myers giving evening bags as gifts in 1925

In 1936 lucky Dick Powell and Joan Blondell knew somebody connected with one of the big department stores. They spent some time on a pre-Christmas Sunday as the store's only customers.

"Sometimes the stars prefer to shop in a group. Madge Evans and Una Merkel usually shop together. Promise not to tell anyone, but this year, Una is giving handbags and fitted cosmetic cases while Madge is giving quilted chiffon velvet bed jackets which she brought back from her from a recent trip to London."

A magazine told a story of some ladies who followed actress Irene Dunne all around a department store and bought all the clothing that she bought. The reporter suggested that they would be disappointed to find that Miss Dunne wasn't buying things for herself but for "a servant's birthday."

This year Wallace Beery will surprise little Carol Ann Beery with a collection of dolls, one from almost every country in the world which Wally collected himself on his recent trip to Europe. Robert Montgomery is giving some gifts that he purchased while traveling in the East. His wife is giving compacts, scarves and pocketbooks. When this article was written, Elizabeth Montgomery was three years old.

Garbo herself was seen buying a man's wristwatch and a dozen necklaces. No one asked who the wristwatch was for. John Barrymore is looking a new motor cars. Stuart Erwin is also shopping for a car to surprise his wife, June Collyer.

Frederic March ordered a combination repeating gramophone and radio.

Warner Baxter a radio for his mother. Who would buy an iPad mini or tablet this year?
Uncle Bernie shows his wares to Vera-Ellen and Johnny McKee.
Ben Gage and Esther Williams pause at the famous orangeade falls.
Christmas 1949, Uncle Bernie's Toy Menagerie , a toy store in Beverly Hills, one that was popular with the Hollywood set, closed its doors one December evening for a party of 'grown up kids.'

The guest list included Esther Williams and Ben Gage, Larry Parks and Betty Garrett, John Ireland and Joanne Dru, Vera-Ellan and Johnny McKee, Candy and Mel Torme, Barbara and Marshall Thompson, Nancy Davis and Peter Thompson, Glenn Denning, Phyllis and Don Taylor and the Churchills. They were there to do some Christmas shopping and they played with the toys themselves.

"William Powell buys bath things until you figure he must be about the cleanest man on earth. After experimenting with several back brushes he finds one with a long handle that reaches all points North and South. He takes it and puts an army of pine soap and shaving necessities. About fifty dollars is invested here to keep the Powell chassis pure, but pure!" Are any of these bath items Christmas gifts?

Shopping for Party Food
We're visiting Young's Market in Los Angeles. William Powell has big parties and he's shopping for one now. He prefers to select the meat for his table whenever he can and he likes a good thick steak. He went in a huddle with the butcher.

Powell "inspected several cuts with a shrewd eye and decided on some porterhouse, well-hung and rimmed with just the right amount of fat. The butcher has a wholesome respect for Bill's judgment." This is apparently the best steak in the market. He will also buy sauces, wines and a lot of candy for the party and the season as a whole.

Carl Brisson is buying Swedish Aalborg Akavit and Kirsebaer Liqueur. (Carl

Brisson's son Frederick was the husband of actress Rosalind Russell.) Katharine Hepburn is at the deli counter. Gary Cooper used to shop himself before he was married. Ralph Bellamy is buying champagne.

Louise Fazenda and Zasu Pitts have arrived to do some shopping together! Joan Crawford likes brandied and spiced fruits. The Selznicks like their caviar, as does Merle Oberon. Ronald Colman likes nuts, Macadamia nuts.

Sally Eilers doesn't deny that she's stopped by at lunchtime and is eating the free samples but she'll buy what she likes. Ginger Rogers gets fancy cookies and crackers also green fig marmalade.

Madge Evans is buying cheese. Mrs. Harold Lloyd buys a large quantity of Roquefort cheese for her family.

Cecil B. DeMille may go shopping himself and head straight for the fancy sausage department. "He sweeps a lavish hand down the showcase and says 'I'll take some of that.'"

Louis B. Mayer has a standing order for kippered barracuda and Eastern smoked whitefish which is delivered to him every week at the studio. The best candy customers are Myrna Loy, Katharine Hepburn, Mrs. Pat O'Brien and Zasu Pitts.

A late 1936 Motion Picture interviews Powell and Harlow. The article also mentions his penchant for parties and gives a clue as to why people, including local merchants would like like William Powell.

"At MGM that lot of well-liked regular guy stars, Bill is one of the best liked of all. Everyone from the biggest big shot of all down to the newest and humblest worker is his pal. They don't call him Mr. Powell they call him Bill. Always at about 4 in the afternoon Bill stands treat on his stage.

"He sees to it that candies, peanuts, soda pop and sandwiches, hamburgers with onions, cold beer and other pick-me-ups are brought onto the set. Everybody cuts in, Bill stands the treat. It's a time-honored custom and nobody'd think of cutting in on Bill's privilege of paying for the works. Then at the close of every picture, Bill throws a big stage party. He's arranged with a big-time caterer to move onto the stage as soon as the director yells the final, 'Cut!'"

The Christmas Tree

Bette Davis telegraphed a request for a tree to be cut from her 110-acre estate on Sugar Hill which she purchased as a summer home. The 10-foot New Hampshire fir tree, wrapped in burlap started its long rail journey across the country December 8, 1939 bound for Miss Davis' Los Angeles Home.

At Harold Lloyd's house there is a special Christmas custom. The tree which little Gloria has each year is a live one in a box. After Christmas each year the decorations are removed and the tree replanted until today she has living trees as memories of each Christmas.
This from a 1930 newspaper article. Gloria Lloyd Roberts was born on May 22, 1924 Feb. 10, 2012 at the age of 87.

Feeling homesick this holiday? Greta Garbo will celebrate with a little bit of Sweden having had her Christmas tree from the old country shipped from there. Miriam Jordan has had her mother ship her plum pudding from England.

Fans had some great opportunities in the old days, too. In 1928 magazines had lots of contests. Write an essay and win Charlie Chaplin's camera, Mary Pickford's desk set, John Gilbert's wristwatch or Greta Garbo's negligee.

"The Garbo boudoir gown designed by Gilbert Adrian is of Nile green transparent velvet. The gown fastens in the front with a bow of self material, a wrap around drape effect. An exaggeration of the dolman sleeve is graceful."

Here's the topic for the 1928 Garbo essay: Is an actress' popularity affected favorably or unfavorably by tragic roles? Why? Is an actress at the mercy of the character she plays or does the personality of the player measure her popularity?

Jack Benny goes Christmas shopping

Wrapping with the stars, 1937:

Joan Crawford has chosen a color scheme of blue and silver. Ginger Rogers has selected a reddish gold paper to match her hair.

Myrna Loy's is a radiant blue star studded with blue and white cellophane ribbon to bind it.

Gary Cooper will send out his presents wrapped in paper gay with hunting scenes. Ronald Colman has selected English snow scenes.

Silky paper printed with the music of famous old Christmas carols will wrap Jeanette MacDonald's gifts.

Madge Evans is planning a doggy Christmas, she has had her gift wrappings stamped with the pictures of her four pets two Scotties and two Pekingese. The Jack Oakies, Charlie Ruggles and Alice Brady all dog lovers are working out the same idea.

Grace Moore has chosen pure white. Her packages are covered with white cellophane over white tissue paper and tied with wide white satin ribbon. Into each is tucked her favorite flower a fresh white gardenia.

"Cover a few pillows with inexpensive bright red sateen and perhaps make a slip cover for one of the chairs in sateen, too," suggests Stephen Goosson Art director aka interior decorator at First National Studios. Some people "wrap" some of their paintings complete with tying a ribbon or adding bows, that is they cover them in wrapping paper at holiday-time.

A 1925 article suggested gift wrapping an empty box. Fill it with individual favors for each guest and then place that box on the buffet set flanked by lighted candles. Great idea if you aren't planning a sit-down meal and can't leave something at each person's place setting.

Like all of us, stars love their pets. Christmas 1935 or 1936 William Powell had a bracelet made for Jean Harlow with charms that looked like her Persian cats.

Dorothy Gish never had an engagement ring for the good reason that she was

never engaged. She just got married without five minutes warning. That was James Rennie's way of doing things.

For a year he had been proposing to her all over New York and most of Westchester, New Jersey and Long Island.

Gish had been answering, "Take care, some day when you spring that little joke some woman will take you up."

He was a handsome Broadway matinee idol and she believed that proposals had become a habit with him.

Miss Gish and Rennie were two of the principals in a double elopement five years ago in which the other actors were Constance Talmadge and John Pialoglou. They were on a motor trip through Connecticut the day after Christmas 1920 in Dorothy's car.

James Rennie and Gish are still good friends with both Constance and her ex-husband. We don't deserve happiness. There is no reason why we should be happy after an escapade as silly as that one. But the gods were good to us. Which goes to show that there are no rules for marriage. It's a game of catch-as-catch-can, in which the loser is wretched and the winner is-- well darn lucky!
