Margaret Hamilton meets Mr Rogers Wicked Witch Wizard of Oz

Wizard of Oz Margaret Hamilton Judy Garland
Real vs Make-Believe:
Margaret Hamilton vs The Wicked Witch of the West

Margaret Hamilton was born December 9, 1902 in Cleveland, OH. Her son says the actress caught the acting bug early. She wasn't allowed to pursue acting until she attending college and earning a degree to teach kindergarten.

She was in her mid-30s in 1939 when cast in The Wizard of Oz. She had three roles, the Wicked Witch of the East, the Wicked Witch of the West and Almira Gulch.

Hamilton said she won the role largely because of her shudder-producing witch's cackle, which she developed while playing the same part in stage versions of the L. Frank Baum classic children's book.

His mother took the Wicked Witch role because her son says, "she lived by the philosophy, 'You accept every gig you're offered.'"
-- The Topeka Capital Journal

Short segment about character actresses mentions Hamilton and Louise Beavers

She has become a pop culture icon. Her legendary role as the Wicked Witch of the West was ranked #4 on the American Film Institute's Villains List of the 100 years of The Greatest Screen Heroes and Villains.

Her character, The Wicked Witch of the West follows only these three baddies: Dr. Hannibal Lechter Silence of the Lambs, Norman Bates Psycho and Darth Vader from The Empire Strikes Back.

The two following the Wicked Witch are Nurse Ratched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Mr Potter from It's a Wonderful Life

The Villains list also includes Michael Corleone from The Godfather Part 2 at number eleven. During talk of movie heroes and villains there may be dissension about which characters you may classify as a true villain or hero. Experience, knowledge, personal taste and more will enter into any discussion of the arts.

The Wicked Witch costume, one modeled after the costume she wore in the 1939 film continues to be a best seller. Her image is immediately recognizable. Theaters and fans around the world are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the film.

Mr. Rogers showed a photo of her like this
to the children on the show.
Her son, Hamilton Meserve speaks about her and has done an informative and moving tribute to her for the channel TCM.

Mr. Meserve appeared in Topeka, KS in 2009 where he talked about an accident his mother had on the Munchkinland set of The Wizard of Oz.

Shocked when she tries to take Dorothy's ruby slippers in Munchkinland, the Wicked Witch disappears in a burst of flame and smoke. On the first take, which was successful weeks earlier, Hamilton dropped through a trap door into the arms of stagehands below.

However, on the second take there was a malfunction, and she suffered second-degree burns to her face and third-degree burns to her hands.

"Meserve said one of his earliest images in his memory of his mother was as a 3-year-old seeing her in the hospital after the accident. He was told by his nanny that his mother would 'have a wonderful costume on. She looks just like a mummy.'

"Sure enough, Meserve recalled his mother's head completely encased in bandages except for her left eye, but she was able to joke with the boy about how silly she looked, and 'I left none the wiser,' he said."
-- excerpt from The Topeka Capital Journal

According to the Los Angeles Times, Miss Hamilton had said that she received and faithfully answered as many as 2,000 letters a year from children who knew her from television reruns of the famous film.

Angel in my pocket 1969 Lobby Card
Lee Meriwether, Andy Griffith, Margaret Hamilton

"'Almost always they want me to laugh like the Witch. And sometimes when I go to schools, if we're in an auditorium, I'll do it. And there's always a funny reaction, like Ye gods, they wish they hadn't asked. They're scared. They're really scared for a second. Even adolescents.

"I guess for a minute they get the feeling they got when they watched the picture. They like to hear it but they don't like to hear it. And then they go, Ohhhhhhhhhh!...

"The picture made a terrible impression of some kind on them, sometimes a ghastly impression, but most of them got over it, I guess... Because when I talk like the Witch and when I laugh, there is a hesitation, and then they clap. They're clapping at hearing the sound again.'"
-- excerpt from The Making of the Wizard of Oz, Aljean Harmetz

Margaret Hamilton appeared in more than 70 films. It surprises some people to learn that she appeared in The Wizard of Oz for only 12 minutes.

Classic TV fans will also remember her as Hester Frump on The Addams Family.

She appeared in her witch costume in an episode of Sesame Street. Apparently after complaints from parents of terrified children, the episode has not been seen since 1976.

On May 14, 1975, Margaret Hamilton, the former kindergarten teacher, appeared on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

Early in the episode, Mr. Rogers went to Elsie Neal's craft shop, where he gets to make witch's hat out of construction paper. He sees the costume worn by Ms. Hamilton during her appearance in the Wizard of Oz.

Back at his house, he greets Ms. Hamilton in person. They talk about her role in as a witch, the costume, make up, all the work that went into creating the character. Ms. Hamilton demonstrates her role by putting on her witch costume and talks about her own grandchildren.

Mister Rogers talks about how witches are only pretend. He describes the difference between real things and make-believe things.

Homemade Halloween Costumes 5 TV Moms

Here are 5 unique Halloween costumes to use whether you're trick-or-treating with the kids, handing out candy or going to a party. Fast Halloween costumes because you can shop your closet. Use what you have and will wear again.

These famous TV moms are known for playing mothers on television shows, being moms on reality shows and/or just for being moms in real life.

We have a cartoon mom, science fiction costume, western costume, 1970s sitcom and an Iron Chef. Can you guess??

1) One of the iconic outfits worn by Dr. Maureen Robinson, played by June Lockhart, in Lost in Space was a purple uniform. A purple top and pants will do.

Do you have a purple running suit or yoga or jogging suit? Just accessorize your Purple Woman's Tracksuit.
The Lost in Space Doctor Maureen Robinson action figure is part of a collectible series that brings back a lot of memories.

A belt and purple boots or sneakers round out the classic sci fi outfit. The UGG Women's Classic Short Boot comes in so many colors.

Will you carry a science fiction gun or other prop? Fans refer to her hair color as anything from honey blonde to redhead. Do you want to wear a wig?

The Lost in Space cast is legendary. June Lockhart was the wife of John Robinson (Mark Goddard) and mom to Judy (Marta Kristen), Penny (Angela Cartwright) and Will (Billy Mumy). The show ran 1965-1968. Just before Lost in Space, you may remember Lockhart as Timmy's mom on Lassie.

Buy Lost in Space DVDs - Seasons 1 - 3.

2) Maude, played by Bea Arthur. The show ran 1972 to 1978. As Maude Findlay, Beatrice Arthur was Edith Bunker's cousin, first appearing on All in the Family. We may think of the character in slacks, a blouse and a long vest, maybe a scarf. A grey wig can add to the look.

Don't forget her attitude and catch phrases such as, "God'll get you for that!"

She is married to Walter, mom to Carol (Adrienne Barbeau) and grandmother to Phillip who lived with the Findlays.

The Long Country Suede Vest is maybe a modern version of what Maude would wear, and something you'd wear again, too. Check your closet. Nothing is better than free Halloween costumes! Get Maude: The Complete First Season on DVD.

Rue McClanahan played next door neighbor and friend, Vivian. McClanahan and Bea Arthur would go on to star with Betty White and Estelle Getty in The Golden Girls. A group of you can wear costumes from your closet and be Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia and Rose. Think about hairstyles, mannerisms, famous sayings and accessories?

Characters like Maude also make for good plus size Halloween costumes. You can choose whatever size and style work for your body type, and getting something in your price range that you can wear later to work or out to dinner is very budget-friendly. Beatrice Arthur 20X24 Color Photo (above)

3) On The Big Valley, Victoria Barkley is played by Barbara Stanwyck. Too bad she never met Ben Cartwright over on The Ponderosa.

She was a great character and actually had a pretty wide ranging wardrobe. She wore everything from long, feminine dresses, suits with skirts to belted slacks with shirts -- better to wear while riding a horse.

On at least one Big Valley episode, she even wore a cool waist-length black leather jacket. You can get by with a dark maxi skirt, western button-down shirt and a scarf or bandana around your neck. Maybe cowboy boots if you have them. Add some suede gloves, a grey/blonde wig.

The Port Authority Women's Long Sleeve Easy Care Shirt comes in lots of colors and sizes.
Victoria had a women's gamblers-type black hat. You can get a soft, waterproof, crushable, felt Gambler hat which comes in two colors and has received 4 1/2 stars from customers.

Victoria Barkley, the widow of Thomas Barkley, was head of a wealthy family in 19th century California. They owned and ran The Barkley Ranch. She was a no-nonsense woman who took care of business and protected her children Jarrod (Richard Long), Nick (Peter Breck), Audra (Linda Evans) including Heath, played by Lee Majors, who was her late husband's illegitimate son.

The show ran 1965-1969. The Big Valley 16X20 Color Photo (above). Watch Big Valley on DVD Season 1 and Season 2 are available to see without commercials or network watermarks.

4) There is only one female Iron Chef at this time, Catherine "Cat" Cora. She was born on New Year's Day in 1968. From Iron Chef America, Cat Cora's chef outfit would make a fun costume, an ideal last minute Halloween costume! Her grandfather and father were both restaurateurs and she is a Greek American chef. Update 2013: There are now two female Iron Chefs! Alexandra "Alex" Guarnaschelli became an Iron Chef in 2012 after winning the Next Iron Chef television competition.

Wear a white, blue or black chef jacket. Carry a whisk, a ladle, a wooden spoon??  For fun, you could carry your clothes iron or something made of cast iron!
Put your hair in a ponytail -- you mean to battle! There are black and white chef's pants if you want to be real with it. :-)

The mens/womens sewn collar chef coat comes in black or white and several sizes.

Need a fun couples costume? Pair her with your guy and he's Bobby Flay or Mario Batali?

She was also the co-host,with Curtis Stone, of the first season of Around the World in 80 Plates. Cat Cora's Kitchen: Favorite Meals for Family and Friends is one of her popular cookbooks.

Chef Cat Cora has four sons to cook for. Do the kids want to dress as chefs, too? Let them dress in professional costumes this year.

She appeared on The Talk on Halloween, October 31st, making spooktacular Halloween treats!

"So now America, with an open heart and an empty stomach,
I say unto you in the words of my uncle: 'Allez cuisine!'"

5) Jane Williamson Read works at home as a tax accountant. Her husband's name is David. He runs a catering business from home and might like to exchange recipes with Cat Cora. They have three kids, a boy and two girls.

Did you know who this was without any pictures? If you have young children or grandchildren you just might have. Jane, her husband and children are aardvarks. Her daughters are D.W. and Kate and her son's name is Arthur.

The PBS television series is based on the Arthur book series, written and illustrated by Marc Brown. The 16th season of Arthur begins this week on PBS Kids!

She has short brown hair. Jane is very busy being a working mother. She's fond of sweaters and pants. On the show she often wears a pink sweater with a white shirt and blue jeans. In the books, you'll see her a wider variety of clothes. Favorites seem to be her pink, blue and green sweaters. Cartoon Halloween costumes are fun.

Kiss Hello, Kiss Good-Bye (Marc Brown's Arthur Mini Play Books)

Just like with Lily Munster, you determine how far you want to take things like the make-up in a costume like this. You can buy or make a mask, create make-up, buy or make some ears! I've found that mouse ears, bear ears and monkey ears look the most like Arthur the Aardvark ears. What a fun mother and son Halloween costume.

The Ringspun Cotton Crew Sweater comes in a lot of colors, has high ratings from customers and has a new low price. Hooray for cheap Halloween costumes. Mrs. Read would love this comfy sweater. Keep her comfortable but active in Not Your Daughter's Jeans Tummy Tuck Women's 5 Pocket Bootcut Jean.

You can take a plain plastic headband, some construction paper and some glue or tape and create your own ears for a one-time event. Make a mask using markers or crayons, the back of a paper plate and some string. It's an opportunity to do a craft project with your kids. Show them how to create DIY halloween costumes. Download a Mother Aardvark mask. Carry a baby Arthur aardvark doll.

Watch an Arthur DVD or give a set as a gift.

Snooki Nicole Polizzi: 10 Famous TV Moms: Costume Ideas

Nicole Snooki Polizzi is one of the stars of the MTV reality show, Jersey Shore. Like other moms, Wilma Flintstone, Lily Munster and Marge Simpson, she's known for an iconic hairstyle.

Snooki is 24 years old and stands 4' 9". Engaged to entrepreneur Jionni LaValle, Snooki gave birth to their first child, Lorenzo Dominic LaValle on August 26, 2012. Little Lorenzo was a healthy six pound baby.

This month the hit show began its sixth and final season. One of the spin-offs is Snooki & JWoww. It's going to focus on Polizzi living with her friend Jennifer Farley. It should air later in 2012.

Looking for cute Snooki costumes? The Jersey Shore Snooki Adult Women's Costume (right) has two pieces, a very tight pink, black and white animal print mini dress and a dark shrug.

Get any party started wearing the Jersey Shore JWoww Dress Adult Women's Costume. Choose red or white; it even has an enhanced bust.

Especially in this economy, it's a good idea to buy something you can wear again. Get a costume that can be used more than once, can portray more than one character, something you can swap and/or donate later. Use a real dress to portray a character.

Guys might shout "Yaba daba doo" because some of the costumes you'll find for the Jersey Shore ladies are as cute and wild as the costumes for grown up Pebbles from The Flintsones and Tarzan's Jane!
The Lindsay Mesh Animal Print Dress (left) is a lined animal print dress comes in different sizes (not sold as a costume) and has already gotten a 5 star review. The one-shoulder black and white Leopard Print dress comes in three plus sizes.

These are just a couple of the fun animal print dresses! Have a Snooki costume one day and a dress for a date, the next.

Accessorize with fun pieces to bring it to being Snooki. The hair is essential to your costume! If you're lucky enough to have the hair for it, pin it up in Snooki-style. If not, indulge in a Jersey Poof Adult Wig.

A different version, the Jersey Shore Snooki Wig has a high customer rating.

Just like with Kim Kardashian and Paul Teutul Sr., a clever addition to the outfit would be Snooki by Nicole Polizzi, her fragrance.

Snooki has written three books. A recent one was Gorilla Beach. All of her books are or should be in the future available in Kindle eReader editions. You can find out more on the Amazon Snooki Nicole Polizzi Author Page. Her book, Baby Bumps: From Party Girl to Proud Mama and all the Messy Milestones Along the Way came out in 2013.

Remember the South Park Snooki? The real person is able to laugh at herself. She made light of an episode of South Park in the Fourteenth Season called, It's a Jersey Thing. They featured a character called Snooki.

Actor Vince Green plays a character named Snookie in the movie, Save the Last Dance. Legend is that in middle school friends gave her the nickname based the movie character because she was the first one to kiss a boy.

Get your very own Jersey Shore Snooki Cardboard Stand-Up like the one at the top of the page.

Snooki, LaValle and new baby Lorenzo are on the cover of the new issue of People Magazine (on newsstands 10/09). Snooki says she's a new person now, "The partying is long gone." Have you seen Snooki's new show Snooki & JWoww?

Harriet Oleson: 10 Famous TV Moms: Costume Ideas

“In Walnut Grove, you win or you die. There is no credit at the Mercantile.” Rumor has it that Harriet Oleson may have said this to daughter, Nellie in the back of their general store.

Oleson's Mercantile was the general store in Walnut Grove, Minnesota in the late 1800s. It was owned and run by husband and wife, Nels and Harriet Oleson.

The couple had two children, Nellie and Willie. Later when Nellie Oleson had grown, they adopted little Nancy. The show was Little House on the Prairie. It ran from 1974-1983.

The Oleson women would be delightful to portray because you get to think about Victorian costume, 1800s clothing just to start. Mrs. Oleson and her girls were town terrors who usually got theirs in the end. As ostentatious and nasty as they were, they may fall off a stage coach into a mud puddle at the end of an episode.

The Sleeveless Satin Party Gown Gothic Victorian Ruffles Prom Lolita Dress comes in different colors (right). Looks like a real theater dress, "a The Victorian Sadie Dress Theater Costume looks like something from The Titanic. It comes in three colors and different sizes. Hats are usually sold separately.
great costume that can withstand excessive wearing."

Harriet was played by actress Katherine MacGregor and her husband, Nels, as kind as his wife was conniving, was played by Richard Bull.

Little seems to be known about Harriet's childhood. Nels says in one episode that she was spoiled, she got whatever she wanted. We heard that she was an only child.

In another episode they revealed that twenty-five years earlier she'd been engaged to a preacher who broke off their engagement. Some fanfiction has even been written to fill in the gaps.

With costumes, I like to think about updating the character. Some Steampunk dresses can work. Mrs. Oleson wore a variety of styles. Was she dressed up or was it just another day working at the Mercantile? The Steampunk Victorian Desdemona 2-pc ensemble (choose size).

Create a DIY costume. Do you have a maxi skirt and a ruffled blouse?  Pin up your hair and use a brooch that you already have. The Renaissance Gothic Skirt is a costume-type skirt you could use again and again. Mrs. Oleson would probably have worn a cotton petticoat.

For a contrast and more of a group costume, you can have someone wear more what they call pioneer colonial. Choose a beloved member of the Ingalls family such as Caroline Ingalls, to wear an adult pioneer dress.

Everything I've read suggests that Nellie Oleson on the Little House on the Prairie tv show is a composite of different children who the real Laura Ingalls Wilder grew up with.

The closest one would be a child named Nellie Owens, hence the name. Nellie Owens' parents ran the local Mercantile in Walnut Grove.

Many patterns are available, and there are some good books. Costumes with Character has had some positive reviews. "Make Your Own Costumes from Eleven Time Periods with One Dress!" Clever idea that you may like to look at if you sew. The book will turn a dress into Colonial, Quaker, American Revolution, Young Republic, Romantic Era, Pioneer, Civil War, Sailor, Victorian 1880s & 1890s and Turn of the Century versions. It's a history lesson as well as a sewing guide.

The Waltons tv show was on the air at the same time as Little House. The show was set in rural Virginia in the 1930s-40s. They also had a general store run by what you might say was a somewhat mismatched couple, Ike and Corabeth Godsey. They adopted a daughter, Amy Godsey (Aimee Godsey). That program was also based on a real-life person, John-Boy Walton based on the show's creator, Earl Hamner, Sr.

For Harriet's hair, you'll need dark hair in a bun or some other type of updo. Occasionally she had a very elaborate style. For a budget-friendly wig, try a Geisha wig or maybe, in the same style but smaller, the Japanese lady wig

Are you going to add a hat or a fascinator? Again, Mrs. Oleson had a wide variety of hats. This can influence what you do with your hair or what wig you choose.

I like thinking out of the box, especially when you're updating Harriet. The Retro French Twist Wig would be a style she'd wear. Always double check on wigs. They're updated and may note match photos here but can be similar. For a costume, see what will work for what you need. Is it a competition, trick or treating, a small party?

Don't forget Victorian, Renaissance & Medieval Costumes, wigs and accessories cross over into different genres. Harriet Oleson one day can be tweaked and you're ready for the Vampyre Ball in a few months! Assemble your own Steampunk costumes and turn them into different characters getting the most for your money. Swap with friends, too.

A Nellie Oleson wig (and as it follows, a Nancy Oleson wig) is much easier to find.

There are a lot of adorable mini hats that are easy to wear and easy on the budget. A Victorian ladies' hat, even a good reproduction is something that can set you back a bit.

For something more traditional, there is the Green Mini Victorian Costume hat. A Mini Red Lace Top Hat (right) updates Mrs. Oleson and gives her a whole new sense of attitude for our time and hers.

Give her a ruffled parasol.  Mrs. Oleson was known for carrying different colors and types of parasols.

Give Harriet a Black and White Cameo Pendant Necklace or brooch. She was often seen with such a piece of jewelry. Remember the episode when she noticed a cameo was missing from stock?

The Little House on the Prairie DVD Set: The Complete Television Series is a set that contains nine seasons + three TV movies. Do you remember the spin-off, Father Murphy? What were your favorite episodes of Little House on the Prairie? The set has high marks from customers. Did you love to hate Mrs. Oleson?

As nasty as she could be, she always seemed to get hers by the end of the episode. The few times that the Olesons' marriage appeared to really be threatened, they always got back together. Nellie ended up tamed by her husband, Percival, becoming a mom herself to twins and actually friends with Laura Ingalls when they were adults.

The Olesons' adopted daughter, Nancy came across as even more rotten than Nellie ever was. When they went to adopt her, they were told how she behaved....

Miss Mason: In the four weeks that Nancy's been here, she has set fire to her bed, broken more windows than I can count, poured plaster into the indoor plumbing and bitten half the children in the orphanage.

Mrs. Oleson: Well, girls will be girls!

The Complete Little House Nine-Book Set. Included is Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, Farmer Boy, On the Banks of Plum Creek, By the Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, These Happy Golden Years and The First Four Years.

Don't miss Alison Arngrim's book, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated. You can also get the book in Kindle eReader edition. Nellie's mother taught her well.

There are memoirs such as The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House by Melissa Anderson who played Mary Ingalls, and by Melissa Gilbert, called Prairie Tale. Melissa Gilbert was Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Laura Ingalls Wilder has an author page: Find items by and about her. Share the books with your family.

If you're looking for a Laura Ingalls Wilder biography, there are many good ones to choose from. There was much to her life beyond just what we saw on the television show.

In July of this year, Alison Angrim was among the esteemed guests at the annual Laurapalooza in Mankato, Minnesota. The event appears to be a mix of the fan gathering and the scholarly symposium, held at Minnesota State University Campus. The topics sounded interesting. Early in the year the have a Call for Proposals. The topics may include historical issues from women's rights to farming, folk music to food preservation.

This Family Feud Special is from 1981. Katherine MacGregor is in the second game about point 21:00. Along with Richard Dawson, you'll see Susan Lucci, Joan Collins, Mackenzie Phillips, Marla Gibbs, Col. Gordon Cooper, and so many more! She played a nurse on Mannix.

Some of the cast reunited on The Today Show to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Little House on the Prairie. You may be able to catch actress and activist Alison Arngrim who played Nellie Oleson. She is touring in a one-woman show promoting her book, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch.
