When the silent film version of Olive Higgins Prouty's story, Stella Dallas came out in 1925 a marked increase in the use of Stella as a birth name was noted over the next few years.

Prouty also wrote Now, Voyager. It was made into a 1942 film which starred Bette Davis, Paul Henreid, Gladys Cooper and Claude Rains.

Do you share a name with a famous movie character? In High Anxiety, Mel Brooks played Dr. Richard H. Thorndyke. The H was for Harpo. His mother loved the Marx brothers. :-) 

Stella is a Latin name meaning Star. Looking for celestial names? Maybe you're into astronomy or science fiction. In the 16th century Sir Philip Sidney wrote a collection of sonnets, Astrophel and Stella. In some texts, the title is amended to Astrophil and Stella. Was this the first appearance of the name?

Stellaluna is a popular children's book written and illustrated by Janell Cannon. It's about a mother fruit bat protecting her child. The images are as wonderful as the story. I've heard of a mother of twins who named her children Stella (star) and Luna (moon).

What other movies are there with a character named Stella? Maybe even a title character? There was even a radio soap opera called Stella Dallas. 1930s movies are getting more popular. Check out Stella Adler's The Art of Acting, a great tool if you want to become an actor.

In 1937 that local newspaper was running a contest in conjunction with the film's opening to see how many women or girls named Stella they could find. A business can use something like this as a promotion. The first ten people with this name get in free.

Maybe the first one that comes to people's minds is A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams.




The 2nd Annual Tony Awards in 1948 saw three women share the award for Best Actress in a Play. They were Judith Anderson in Medea, Katharine Cornell in Antony and Cleopatra and Jessica Tandy in the newly opened A Streetcar Named Desire. Interesting to note that there were no pre-announced Tony nominees before 1956.

Tandy played Blanche Dubois. Some others in that very first cast were Karl Malden as Harold "Mitch" Mitchell,  Marlon Brando as Stanley Kowalski and Kim Hunter as Stella Kowalski.

Hollywood impacting fashion: When Clark Gable appeared without an undershirt in It Happened One Night (1934) sales of undershirts plummeted. In A Streetcar Named Desire, Marlon Brando made the undershirt and t-shirt back cool again and sales picked up noticeably. 



 
In the 1951 film, A Streetcar Named Desire directed by Elia Kazan, the cast was virtually the same with one difference. Marlon Brando as Stanley Kowalski, Kim Hunter as Stella Kowalski, Karl Malden as Harold "Mitch" Mitchell. Vivien Leigh was Blanche DuBois.

Leigh won an Oscar for Best Actress at the 24th Academy Awards presented in 1952. Hunter and Malden received Oscars for Best Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor respectively. The film had even more nominations.

In a 1980 Sidney Lumet film called Just Tell Me What You Want, Myrna Loy plays Stella Liberti. The movie also stars Ali MacGraw and Alan King. This was Myrna Loy's final feature film.

How Stella Got Her Groove Back with an all-star cast, 1998. Angela Bassett is Stella. The film is from the Terry McMillan book.

The first thing my friend thought of with the name Stella was Stella D'Oro Italian Cookies and Toasts. The biscotti can be dipped in wine or coffee, cappuccino is nice. We have relatives who make their own biscotti. You can dip it in chocolate, yum.

Are you familiar with the work of Dr. Oliver Sacks on music therapy and memory? You and your loved one may find a connection through creating or appreciating music or art. You can get in some exercise and fun. 

Consider what stage of the disease your family member is in, what kind of day he or she is having. There are many sources in the community and online with ideas.

Start with something easy, free-form. Make a greeting card, a scrapbook page. Make something as a gift or memento for yourself. Have a variety of materials, colors, options and patience.

The holidays can be a particularly trying time for people with diseases such as Alzheimers. Consider what we can do for them and for ourselves as caretakers to make this time more peaceful and pleasant. Make more special memories. 

I recall when we went through taking care of a relative who had Alzheimer's and some other medical issues, at times she found marching to music to be easier on her legs than walking. It was a lot more fun, too.

Olivia de Havilland is perhaps best known for the screen epic Gone With the Wind where she played the role as Melanie Hamilton opposite Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.

Ms. de Havilland appeared in eight films with Errol Flynn including The Adventures of Robin Hood. She is the sister of the late actress Joan Fontaine. 

The sisters were both nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award in 1942. 
Fontaine won that year for her role in Suspicion (an Alfred Hitchcock movie) over de Havilland's performance in Hold Back the Dawn.  

Olivia de Havilland won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her work in the film To Each His Own.

Once married to Orson Welles, Rita Hayworth was an iconic actress and dancer active from the 1930s through the 1970s. She danced with Fred Astaire in You'll Never Get Rich. 

Some of her best known films include Gilda, Cover Girl, The Lady From Shanghai, Salome and The Story on Page One. Rita Hayworth was an American servicemen's pinup.

Her marriage to Orson Welles lasted 1943-1948. They had one daughter.

Rita Hayworth died in 1987 from Alzheimer's Disease at the age of 68.

According to a 1987 The New York Times article, Hayworth "had been under the care of her second daughter, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, who by publicizing her mother's tragic illness had drawn national and international attention to Alzheimer's disease, about which little was known until recent years." 

When public figures discuss their experiences with the disease it can make it easier for the rest of us to face our situation and get help.

There is annual Rita Hayworth Alzheimer's Gala was held at the Waldorf Astoria. I've also read of an annual Alzheimer's Association Rita Hayworth Gala taking place Mother's Day weekend at the Hilton in Chicago.

Mary Martin was born December 1, 1913 in Weatherford, Texas. She would have been 100 in 2013. She was only 76 when she died in 1990.

 Martin was best known for her films and for her stage work such as Peter Pan, South Pacific.  

Playing Maria in The Sound of Music on Broadway won her a Tony Award.

She was also the mother of actor Larry Hagman, from I Dream of Jeannie and Dallas.

This got me wondering about other family members who may have stars next to or near one another. Ready for a Hollywood Star scavenger hunt? I could use some help with this one because I've only found out about a handful and have had help so hoping all the information is accurate. I believe that stars are occasionally moved, such as when John Lennon's star was moved so that all four Beatles' stars could be close together by the Capitol Records Building. So the info here is as accurate as possible.

The stars of Carl Reiner and his son, Rob Reiner can be found at 6421 Hollywood Blvd. Lloyd Bridges' star sits in between those of his sons, Beau and Jeff Bridges at 7065 Hollywood Blvd. Lloyd and Jeff got their stars in 1994, while Beau received his in 2003.

Tex Ritter is next to his son John at 6631 Hollywood Blvd. Just as Allan Jones 6100 Hollywood Blvd is beside his son, Jack Jones 6104 Hollywood Blvd.

Laura Dern's star is close to those of her parents, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. They are separated by one star above (James Coburn) and one below (Peggie Castle) all at 6270 Hollywood Blvd.

Bruce Dern won the Best Actor award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival for his role in Alexander Payne's Nebraska. Laura Dern attended AFI Festival gala screening of the film at the iconic Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Antonio Aguilar has a star at 7060 Hollywood Blvd. right next to that of his son, Pepe Aguilar.

How about famous siblings? There are lists already that mention siblings like the Jacksons, Osmond Family, Lennon Sisters, Smothers Brothers and the Oleson Twins who share a single star.

Groucho Marx has two stars but there doesn't appear to be a star for the Marx Brothers or any of his brothers individually. 

Janet Jackson's star has the same street address as the star for her brother's group, The Jacksons, 1500 Vine Street, but they're actually several stars apart. Walking distance definitely. Michael Jackson's individual star is located at 6927 Hollywood Blvd.

But the stars of sisters Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle are separated only by Carl Smith. Rick (1515 Vine St.) and David Nelson (1505 Vine Street) are also one star apart. Jack Benny is between them! 

Some things seemed funny. Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly beside each other. Penny Marshall is closer to Cindy Williams than to her brother, Garry Marshall. Fans will like to see Laverne and Shirley.

There are more stars of couples, including married couples, than I would've thought near one another. Some married couples, such as Sonny & Cher, Ozzie & Harriet Nelson, Stiller and Meara share a star. Mickey Rooney shares one of his stars with wife, Jan.

For some reason Gracie Allen has just one star, for television. Her star and that of her husband, George Burns' star for Live Performance, have the address 6672 Hollywood Blvd.

Bob Hope's Live Performance star is next to that of his wife, Dolores Hope at 7021 Hollywood Blvd. Gloria and Emilio Estefan's stars are next to one another at 7021 Hollywood Blvd.

In 2013 Richard Burton received a star on the Walk of Fame. His star resides beside that of former wife, Elizabeth Taylor. You can find them at 6336 Hollywood Blvd. 

Maybe you saw one of the Burton and Taylor biopics that aired around this time. In October 2013, the BBC aired Burton and Taylor, starring Dominic West (The Hour, The Wire) and Helena Bonham Carter (Les Miserables, The King’s Speech). Lifetime TV in the US presented their own version in late 2012 Liz & Dick with Lindsay Lohan and Grant Bowler.

Proximity of Stars: Some Walk of Fame landmarks may have the same address but can be actually 30 or more stars apart. Some may have different addresses and be side by side. So their proximity may be next to each other or it may be negligible. 

Consider Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen whose stars have the address 7021 Hollywood Blvd. Unless the information I received is incorrect, the two stars aren't very close to each other.

The first stars on The Walk of Fame:
Joanne Woodward is one of a handful of celebrities who were the first to get stars on the Walk of Fame back in 1958. Her star is located at 6801 Hollywood Blvd. However, Paul Newman's star is 7060 Hollywood Blvd. 

"On August 15, 1958, the Chamber and City unveiled eight stars on Hollywood Blvd. at Highland Avenue to create excitement and to demonstrate what the Walk would look like.

The Walk of Fame star for Matt Groening 7021 Hollywood Blvd is approximately 8 stars from the star awarded to The Simpsons! The stars of Walt Disney and Charles M Schulz are among those in between.

December 5th, the designers on Project Runway All Stars will be faced with a challenge of designing a dress for Marge Simpson. Taking her personality, uh ... proportions and hair color into consideration I'm sure will be part of the challenge.

In January 2012, the designers on Project Runway were asked to create an outfit for fashion icon, Miss Piggy.

Edgar Bergen, Shari Lewis, Paul Winchell, Fred Rogers and Fran Allison are other puppeteers or ventriloquists who have stars.

Do you remember Labyrinth, the 1986 David Bowie film directed by Jim Henson, produced by George Lucas? Look for some cool photos and clippings from that film and other Henson collaborations.

When did Grant and Gable receive their stars on the walk of fame? February 8, 1960. That is a very, very popular date. Many of our favorite old actors and actresses received the honor on that date.

The Walk of Fame is a state-registered landmark. Ana Martinez, who produces the Walk of Fame ceremonies for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is a great source of information. You can contact her via the Walk of Fame web site and she sends out regular tweets. Their site also explains the process of nominating someone to receive a star. 

Sadly John Lennon’s star was defaced by vandals just days before his birthday in 2013.

One other interesting piece of info she passed on recently: Just because a celeb was selected for 2013, doesn't mean they have to do it that year. Recipients have 5 years to book ceremony.

June Evelyn Bronson was a teenager attending State College when she met the dashing young Ward Cleaver in Mayfield. How could she resist?

They married, had two sons and Leave It to Beaver, an iconic 1950s television family was created.

Where would those Famous TV Dads be without Famous TV Moms?? There are loads of TV-inspired costumes. Let's look at 10 TV Mom Costume Ideas.

Leave it to Beaver ran from 1957-1963. When the program began, Barbara Billingsley and Hugh Beaumont played June and Ward Cleaver, the parents of Wally, age twelve and Theodore Beaver Cleaver, age seven.

June is a stay-at-home mom. Ward wears as suit and tie, carries a briefcase and goes off to work each day in the Plymouth. Apparently it's not until Season 3 that viewers find out what he does for a living.

The whole Ward Cleaver, Secret Agent theory is blown out of the water. It's revealed that Ward works for a Trust Company. He has a boss called Mr. Anderson. Jim Anderson, in Father Knows Best, was an insurance agent. Any connection? Apparently not.

June usually wore a calf length dress (now also called a 1950s style) with an A-line full skirt, belted or cinched at the waist, short or long sleeves.

For a costume, you may enjoy filling out the skirt with a petticoat or skirt crinoline underneath. Sometimes there may be a v-neck and a little collar,

perhaps a bow.

The dresses were modest on top.  She wore an assortment of prints, plaids and solids. She was known for wearing pearls. Some of these ideas are for the updated June. You can also always get (or create) a T-shirt for the show or in honor of the movie, Airplane! See below.

Still the Beaver, a CBS movie in 1983 and later sequel series The New Leave It to Beaver(1984–1989) also featured now grandmother, June Cleaver, who was widowed. Hugh Beaumont had died of a heart attack in May of 1982 and the TV movie was dedicated to his memory.

A divorced Beaver Cleaver and his two sons lived with her. Wally, his wife, son and daughter lived next door.

June Cleaver is later elected to the Mayfield City Council.

A June Cleaver wig is hard to find. Her short, feminine yet conservative style is not readily found in a costume wig.

Barbara Billingsley appeared in the movie Airplane! playing a role quite unlike June Cleaver, memorable as a passenger who could "speak jive."

Barbara Billingsley died in her home in Santa Monica, California on October 16, 2010. She was 94 years old.
