Cary Claudette and Irene tell The Awful Truth on the radio

The Awful Truth Poster Movie 11x17
In 1937, Cary Grant and Irene Dunne starred in an early screwball comedy, The Awful Truth. Leo McCarey won the Best Director Oscar for this film.

Grant plays Jerry Warriner, Dunne is his soon-to-be-ex-wife, Lucy. As the time of their divorce being finalized draws more near, their efforts to wreck one another's extramarital love affairs become more frantic -- and outrageous. Dunne and Grant's later film, My Favorite Wife has a similar flavor.

"The film is one of a series of what the philosopher Stanley Cavell calls comedies of remarriage, where couples who have once been married, or are on the verge of divorce, etc., rediscover that they are in love with each other, and recommit to the idea of marriage.

"Other examples include The Philadelphia Story and His Girl Friday, both released in 1940 and both starring Grant, and the Noël Coward play and film Private Lives. The original template for this kind of comedy is Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing." --
short excerpt from Wikipedia article on the film

The Awful Truth received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Irene Dunne), Ralph Bellamy for Best Supporting Actor and Viña Delmar for Best Adapted Screenplay. All that with its win for Best Director and that's quite good for a screwball comedy.

Once the popular film was out of theaters, to prevent moviegoers from listening to it for 'free' on the radio Grant performed in The Awful Truth twice on Lux Radio Theater. In 1939 Irene Dunne wasn't available. They were able to get Claudette Colbert to play the part of  Lucy. The radio version wasn't aired until Sept 11, 1939 almost two years after the movie's initial release.

In March, 1941, the radio show did another version this time with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne in the same roles they played in the film.

Watch for a fun segment where Cary Grant plays piano while the couple's much loved and fought over dog, Mr. Smith, barks along.

The cute scene reminds me of the 1990 Jeeves &; Wooster series with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.

Laurie as Bertie Wooster plays piano and sings 47 Ginger Headed Sailors. Aunt Agatha's dog McIntosh joins in.

George Burns vs Clark Gable Gracies Plan

Clark Gable and Deborah Kerr in The Hucksters
Original Lobby Card
Vic Norman, played by Clark Gable, is a less than principled advertising executive who knows that underhanded methods and shocking images can mean sales.

Based on the novel by Frederic Wakeman the 1947 film, The Hucksters stars Gable, Deborah Kerr, Sydney Greenstreet, Ava Gardner and Adolphe Menjou.

As the film was being developed and produced, one method of generating buzz was a series of episodes on the George Burns and Gracie Allen Radio Show.

The George Burns and Gracie Allen radio show, ran from 1933-1950. They transitioned to the new medium of television where their show would air for 8 more years.

Clark Gable had been announced as playing the lead in the film version of the Wakeman story. The idea was simple. Gracie felt that George had more experience in radio than Gable and should be the star of the film.

In the fall and winter of 1946, at least four episodes of their radio show dealt with her antics trying to finagle it so that George Burns would replace Clark Gable in The Hucksters.  One show featured columnist Louella Parsons. Gracie tries to get Parsons' endorsement for George to star in the film.

Audio of Jack Carson's appearance on Burns & Allen October 1946

"Don't you think it's a little embarrassing to be called Radio's Glamor Boy?"

Another show features guest actor Jack Carson. Carson mistakenly thinks Gracie wants him to replace Gable. He does his 'famous' Clark Gable impression including a bit as Rhett Butler.  George Burns and Jack Carson have an acting contest devised by Gracie Allen to see which man is better prepared to replace Clark Gable. With Gracie as the judge, you can guess the outcome....

The series of episodes concludes with Clark Gable's appearing himself, defending his right to star in The Hucksters as the show description says.

All created fun for the Burns & Allen program and lots of promotion for the upcoming movie.

There's a Clark Gable MP3 old time radio collection. It includes over eleven hours of Gable's appearances on radio.

Some on programs like Lux Radio Theater where he recreated his movie hits with actresses like Myrna Loy, Judy Garland and Joan Crawford.

One poster for The Hucksters advertised Gable's New star, Deborah Kerr, who was new to American audiences. Apparently the studio liked to tell people, "Kerr rhymes with star."

The Burns & Allen radio show had an amazing assortment of film and music stars of the era.  Just a handful of them include Jack Benny, Marlene Dietrich, Alan Ladd, Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Claudette Colbert, Ray Milland, Ann Sheridan, Hedy Lamarr, Walter Pidgeon, Bing Crosby, the Marx Brothers, Pat O’Brien, Paul Heinreid, Richard Widmark, Rita Hayworth, William Powell, Cecil B. DeMille and of course, Clark Gable.

Gracie or Bette Davis? Who taught Paul Henreid to light 2 Cigarettes at once?

Glamour Boys, Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart....

Gracie- James Mason, the Cats, a Chair and a Whip

Actors Final Roles; The Misfits: The final film of Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe; The last movies of Tyrone Power Jr. and Tyrone Power Sr.

While many of these stars mentioned current or upcoming projects, I don't recall any other time that a series of episodes of the Burns & Allen show dealt with a project not somehow related to George Burns and/or Gracie Allen. It's fun to hear actors who we're used to seeing as dramatic being funny on this show.

Tallulah Bankhead prepares for a scene in Lifeboat 1944

The glamorous life of a movie star...

Tallulah Bankhead receives a shower while filming Alfred Hitchcock's 1944 film, Lifeboat. A prop man uses a watering can to drench the star.

A handful of people are adrift on a lifeboat. They struggle for survival after having survived a shipwreck in WWII. A German Naval officer is aboard the lifeboat. The characters' physical and psychological struggles will keep you interested and they may make you thirsty.

Joining Ms. Bankhead in the cast are Mary Anderson, Heather Angel, William Bendix, Hume Cronyn, Canada Lee, John Hodiak, Henry Hull and Walter Slezak.

One of the most clever Hitchcock cameos can be found in this film. As the director himself could not suddenly pop up in the lifeboat, his image is seen in a newspaper advertisement. It's in before and after pictures in an ad for Reduco Obesity Slayer. Hitchcock said in an interview that he was proud since he'd recently lost weight at that time.

Top 5 Hitchcock Chicken Scenes

The Top Five Chicken Appearances in Alfred Hitchcock Films

Jimmy Stewart in Rope
High Quality Photo

"Is this real chicken?"
Much has been written about recurring themes in Hitchcock's work. Several people have made studies of birds in his films. Between live birds, statues and avian art objects there is a lot that can be studied. I'm narrowing it down to the occurrences of chicken.

When do his characters eat and talk about chickens? When does Hitchcock himself bring chicken, uh, onto the table?

There are spoilers so if you haven't seen these films, be forewarned. Also I'm no expert on movies or cooking. Finding copyright/royalty-free images & video wasn't always possible so I got creative. These are in no particular order.

Don't be a... You know. Read on.

1) Rope 1948 Starring John Dall as Brandon Shaw, Phillip Morgan as Farley Granger and James Stewart as Rupert Cadell.

Shaw and Morgan have strangled a former classmate to death, thinking it's the perfect murder. Publisher Rupert Cadell was their prep-school housemaster.

"A suspicious Rupert quizzes a fidgety Phillip about this and about some of the inconsistencies that have been raised in conversation. For example, Phillip had vehemently denied ever strangling a chicken at the Shaws’ farm, but Rupert has personally seen Phillip strangle several."

Phillip Morgan (Granger): I never strangled a chicken in my life!

Rupert Cadell (Stewart): You're quite a good chicken strangler as I recall.

2) Topaz 1969 Starring Frederick Stafford as André Devereaux and Karin Dor as Juanita de Cordoba.

It's the most viscerally interesting use of chicken that I could find in a Hitchcock film. Some accounts call the scene reminiscent of the birthing process.

Two members of Juanita's loyal staff agree to have a picnic up on a hill where
President Theodore Roosevelt's
pet one-legged rooster 1910
How about Baron Spreckle the pet Hen
Hitchcock was born 1899
they will photograph the unloading of Soviet missiles. In preparation for this picnic, a camera is placed in a hollowed out ham sandwich.

A camera is also stuffed into the backside of a chicken in a manner that would make Julia Child step forward and strongly object. As luck and Hitch would have it, a while into their picnic, their position is given away by hungry seagulls who squawk and feast upon that hollowed out bread.

Couldn't find photos or a video from this scene but I did find something similar.

Mr. Bean's Christmas Dinner. Rowan Atkinson is Mr. Bean. His losing a wristwatch in his holiday turkey is reminiscent of their placing the camera into the chicken.

Lesson to learn: Be sure there are no take any metal objects, especially those that are ticking or clicking out of your bird before you sit down to dinner. Check, just in case your host/hostess may have neglected to do so. No one in a Hitchcock film, that I can recall, ever walked around with a turkey on his head though.

3) The Birds 1963 Starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor and Jessica Tandy.

Lydia (Jessica Tandy) complains that their chickens won't eat. She thinks it's bad feed. Is this the first strange thing that the Brenners notice amiss at their farm. The first ominous happening before the arrival of .... The Birds??

Tippi Hedren stars as Melanie in The Birds
Photo Autographed/Hand-Signed by Tippi Hedren

In one of Hitchcock's trailers for the film, he sits down to a plate of chicken, starts to eat, but thinks better of it. (approx 5:05)

The Hitchcock Wiki includes a discussion about the creation of its final scene.

"This breathtaking image, a combination of 32 different exposures and Albert Whitlock's stunning matte painting, has been referred to by Hitchcock as, 'the most difficult single shot I've ever done.'"

"Approximately a third of the birds in the shot were dummies, mostly used in the background and on the barn roof for atmospheric purposes. A few were chickens and ducks which had been purchased from a local slaughterhouse, and dyed to mask their natural color.

"The foreground was shot in three panel sections; the few live sea gulls available were shot and re-shot for each piece. Just above the heads of the crows was a long, slender middle section with more of the same gulls spread apart. The car going down the driveway, with the birds on each side of it, was another piece of film, as was the barn, and so on."

The last two examples are fun because they're only Chicken Kisses that could be found. Couples who have to decide whether to eat their chicken or kiss, kiss or eat their chicken. Oh when you're Cary Grant and Grace Kelly -- or Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman -- how do you decide. Why did the chicken cross the road? Because inevitably the chickens come out on the losing side, these couples would rather kiss.

4) To Catch a Thief 1955 Starring Grace Kelly and Cary Grant.

Grant as John Robie Kelly, as Francie Stevens. The couple has a wild ride where Francie nearly runs over a woman and a live chicken. After losing a police car that was tailing them, they pull off the road to eat a picnic from a wicker basket, chicken and beer. Robie drinks directly from the bottle and Francie pours hers into a glass.

To Catch a Thief

When Francie said, "The cat has a new kitten," John Robie decided it was time to get the upper hand...
Get a poster print of their picnic, To Catch a Thief

Francie: You want a leg or a breast?
Robie: You make the choice.

Regardless of which you think came first, people often talk about Hitchcock's dislike for eggs. Did Hitchcock have food phobias? To Catch a Thief contains egg scenes of note. In an interview, he said he knew he'd already shown the snuffing out of a cigarette into food once before in a movie. He did it again here to show his dislike for eggs.

Early in the film, an egg is hurled at Robie by a member of the kitchen staff. It hits a window beside his head, splattering. Later, Jessie Stevens mashes out a cigarette in a fried egg.

5) Notorious 1946 Starring Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant

The most romantic and probably the longest kiss in any of his films. She roasts him a chicken. Despite several breathy comments about the chicken  and how they'll eat it (she tells him that it caught fire), the poor bird is ignored.

Have some cake with Cary Grant, Alfred Hitchcock and Ingrid Bergman Notorious
Maybe they finally ate that chicken earlier?

An honorable mention would go to the film Frenzy 1972.

Alec McCowen as Chief Inspector Oxford is less than delighted with an overcooked bird prepared by Vivien Merchant as Mrs. Oxford.

The 1946 film Deception has a fun scene with Claude Rains, Bette Davis and Paul Henreid. Hollenius' nose knows a good bird. He also orders "a nice brook trout." This Warner Brothers movie was directed by Irving Rapper.

You may remember talk of a brook trout popping up in a memorable scene in Hitchcock's 1959 North by Northwest. The fish is significant in the 1936 screwball comedy, Libeled Lady with Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy directed by Jack Conway.

Another dinner takes place in the film Suspicion. Characters are discussing how someone might be murdered, without leaving any trace of a poison.  All the while they're stabbing at little game hens?

What other Hitchcock Chickens do you remember?
Hitchcock characters have lots of ideas for costumes, be it a fancy dress party, Halloween, what have you. The title character from The Lodger, Mrs. Danvers from Rebecca, dress as villains, gun-wielding housekeepers, glamorous lead characters.

Hitchcock's characters, their makeup, hair, accessories, fashion influence style to this day.  The Birds' Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) continues to be probably the most popular of Hitchcock's female characters to be portrayed for a costume party, fancy dress or Halloween party. You can be gory or glamorous. :-)

At Heidi Klum's 2013 Halloween Party, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig of Marchesa Fashion were stunning as Melanie Daniels from The Birds (Ms. Craig) and Georgina Chapman was amazing as Marion Crane/Janet Leigh from Psycho.

Ms. Chapman even donned greyscale makeup to bring the black and white noir-style heroine to life. Her makeshift costume consisted of a shower curtain worn toga-style. An accessory was a knife and drops of chocolate sauce-colored blood. Very chic and historically accurate.

Tutorial for greyscale makeup:

In the mood to dress as a chicken or turkey? Remember Paul Simon's 1976 appearance on Saturday Night Live where he came on stage dressed as a turkey to sing Still Crazy after all these years?

There are so many Bird Costumes to choose from whether for you, your kids or the whole family. Get ready to shake those tail feathers.

When your kids are called on to dress like one of Old MacDonald's critters or you're in need of a costume to promote your new food truck, no need to squawk. Just pick out the best one to suit you.

Julia Child took her chickens seriously, no messing around.
You ought not mess with a chicken, particularly when the chef is wielding a significantly large knife.

5 California Bay Area Fashion Camps : Sewing Workshop : Fiber Craft

Five California Bay Area Fashion Camps
Sewing Camps : Fiber Craft

Creating our own clothes by sewing, knitting, embellishing, a combination of these or other techniques are as popular as they've been in years past.

Fiber artists are using recycled materials, upcycling their clothing. Not that this is a new concept. Quilters for instance did this for years, out of necessity and creativity, long before there was Project Runway or there were Fashion Police. There are galleries and art shows entirely devoted to fibre arts.

Learn how you can sell t-shirt designs on Zazzle

As with woodworkers and other makers, the milliner and sewer (a gender-free term similar to 'quilter' used instead of 'seamstress') are creating art that is utilitarian. They're also creating heirlooms. Children and grandchildren may embellish and upcycle our creations be it a bureau or a dress with paint or sequins, adjusting the height or the length, changing the knobs or buttons.

TV programs such as Knitty Gritty show the wide spread popularity of knitting as an art form, a social explosion. Radical knitters are out there yarn bombing anything that isn't tied down -- and a few things that are tied down! They give us a new outlook on the world.

Thanks to a new breed of embroidery artists, the antique sampler comes into the 21st century with re-craftings of famous tweets, clip art and facebook posts. The immediacy of the digital era takes on a startling new permanence when it's captured by thread in embroidery.

Something sent over the internet in nanoseconds hangs exposed on a gallery wall. The viewer can imagine the time and care taken by the artist creating that message stitch by stitch by stitch.

The camps, workshops and classes appear and evolve regularly. Keep your eyes open and don't hesitate to ask facilities near you if they'll consider offering a workshop that you'd like to take. Post a flyer at your local library. You could start a sewing, quilting or knitting circle for yourself and/or your kids that easily.

Pat Derby founder of PAWS Animal Rescue on 1970s Television

Pat Derby was the founder and director of the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). She died earlier this month due to cancer. She was a pioneer animal rights activist and will be long remembered. She was only 69.

Getting her start as an animal trainer, she notably trained Lassie and Flipper! This is indeed a loss for those who knew and loved her and a loss for the animals. The organization will carry on in the endeavor that she started.

Here's a little gem from TV in the 70s. Ms. Derby appeared on the game show, What's My Line in 1973. Panelists were Fannie Flagg, Allen Ludden, Arlene Francis and Soupy Sales. We get a history of Derby's work both as an animal trainer and her work forming PAWS.

An interesting side note, a walkway at the Los Angeles Zoo was named in the memory of Allen Ludden, who was married to television great, Betty White. (Betty White is a board member at the Zoo and an animal advocate in her own right.) There is also a man-made lake in Mineral Point was named Ludden Lake in his honor.

You'll see behind the scenes footage of their filming a Ford Cougar commercial as Patricia Derby works with a cougar. Later we see that cougar there on the show.

"Please don't get a wild animal for a pet," is one of her messages.

From their site: "Since 1984, The Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has been at the forefront of efforts to rescue and provide appropriate, humane sanctuary for animals who have been the victims of the exotic and performing animal trades. PAWS investigates reports of abused performing and exotic animals, documents cruelty and assists in investigations and prosecutions by regulatory agencies to alleviate the suffering of captive wildlife."

Animal rights advocates often work very long hours, thanklessly and with too few resources.

The PAWS web site offers an amazing resource of information about animals, Pat Derby and their work.A donation to PAWS is always needed and appreciated. They offer the following message:

"A celebration of Pat's life will be planned at a later date. Ed has requested no flowers be sent. For anyone wishing to honor Pat, he would prefer donations be made to PAWS in her memory. Letters of condolences can be sent to P. O. Box 849, Galt, CA 95632 or emailed to info@pawsweb.org"

Thanks for posting this great video. Please don't hesitate to show some support.
