Creating our own clothes by sewing, knitting, embellishing, a combination of these or other techniques are as popular as they've been in years past.

Fiber artists are using recycled materials, upcycling their clothing. Not that this is a new concept. Quilters for instance did this for years, out of necessity and creativity, long before there was Project Runway or there were Fashion Police. There are galleries and art shows entirely devoted to fibre arts.

 As with woodworkers and other makers, the milliner and sewer (a gender-free term similar to 'quilter' used instead of 'seamstress') are creating art that is utilitarian. They're also creating heirlooms. Children and grandchildren may embellish and upcycle our creations be it a bureau or a dress with paint or sequins, adjusting the height or the length, changing the knobs or buttons.

TV programs such as Knitty Gritty show the wide spread popularity of knitting as an art form, a social explosion. Radical knitters are out there yarn bombing anything that isn't tied down -- and a few things that are tied down! They give us a new outlook on the world.

Thanks to a new breed of embroidery artists, the antique sampler comes into the 21st century with re-craftings of famous tweets, clip art and facebook posts. The immediacy of the digital era takes on a startling new permanence when it's captured by thread in embroidery. 

Something sent over the internet in nanoseconds hangs exposed on a gallery wall. The viewer can imagine the time and care taken by the artist creating that message stitch by stitch by stitch.

The camps, workshops and classes appear and evolve regularly. Keep your eyes open and don't hesitate to ask facilities near you if they'll consider offering a workshop that you'd like to take. Post a flyer at your local library. You could start a sewing, quilting or knitting circle for yourself and/or your kids that easily.

1)  Camp Couture : San Mateo
Sewing Lessons for teens & adults. Summer Camp 2013, Birthday Parties. They've added a section called The Teen Reconstruction Workshop . The class will focus on the art of reconstruction. Take something old and make it new again.

2)  Camp Fashionista : San Jose
Basics in sewing, and fashion sketching, Ages 6 and up. "Each weeks camp ends with a fashion show on Friday to strut your stuff down the catwalk to friends and family." Fashion camp workshops include: Budding fashion designers can learn fashion illustration, create an American Girl Doll & Me Skirt & Headband. Maybe you want to know if a sewing class is right for your child?

3) Rock Paper Scissors : Oakland
Look forward to silkscreen printing classes and also How to be a Spinster make your own handspun yarn. "One of the most ancient forms of craft, spinning is the foundation of all modern textiles." In the past they've hosted a sewing lab at their facility. Keep checking to see what's offered.

4) Children's Knitting Circle : Los Gatos Public Library
Come learn to knit or work on a project you've started, staff and volunteers will help. Drop in, ages 7+ One day/week

Fashion Sewing, Learn to Make Your Own Prom Dress, Mommy/Daddy and Me

Visit The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles for their Fiber Talks and Lectures Series. The Economy has hit everyone hard.

You may be able to find some other local museums who periodically host fiber artists who give talks, do demonstrations and hold workshops.

Crafts San Jose : Button Crafts : A Work of Heart

Is there someone who really knows how to push your buttons?? They say the reason our Mom knows how is because she's the one who sewed them on in the first place.

I'm a big button fanatic and am looking forward to visiting A Work of Heart.

A Work of Heart has week-long kids' camps over the summer months. Check to see which camps still have spots available and what your children may like. There's even one for creative writing. You'll see some of them listed on our Non-traditional camps in the bay area page.

They're located at 2196 Lincoln Ave. across the street from the Senior Center, just north of Elva's Coffee Shop.

Any artist or crafter will appreciate their blog which is beautiful and informative, definitely worth a click.

The shop is closed in early July so get in there and have fun while you can. After that, check out the variety of hot and exciting arts and crafts that are offered.

Buttons are symbolic, they're nostalgic and they're very green and eco-friendly to use in craft and art. Upcycle buttons from your family's clothes. Mother's coat. The kids' old baby clothes. Can you make a cha-cha bracelet from buttons. I sure hope so!

1) The classes at the San Francisco Children's Art Center are for kids as young as two years of age.There is even a photography course available.

2) Museum of Children's Art in Oakland. Starting at age 6 and going through teenagers, Summer Camps are offered. Included are snacks, performances and field trips.

3) ARt YoWZa Kids Summer Camps Alameda. Throughout the summer, your kids can enjoy their wide variety of art themes. Fashion design, cartooning and puppets? Oh my!

4) Sun Gallery: Summer Art Day Camp Hayward. Ceramics and sculpture, games and more fun.

5) Kids Summer Art Camp at The San Jose Museum of Art. At the end of each session, there is an exhibit of student work. Students visit the galleries for inspiration and learning.

Here are some San Francisco, San Jose bay area California summer camps, day camps and workshops where kids and teens, sometimes adults, may get a taste of gardening and urban farming. Try volunteering, backyard farming, maybe an internship at a community farm or garden.

1) Children's Day School in San Francisco is holding a Cooking and Gardening Day Camp. Each day will begin with morning chores and harvesting at the urban farm and garden.

2) City Slicker Farms in Oakland has unpaid internships. The internships are an "opportunity to deepen your knowledge of food justice, to build your gardening skills, and to provide much needed support to City Slicker Farms' mission of increasing food self-sufficiency in West Oakland."

3) Full Circle Farm in Sunnyvale has a Kids Summer Farm Camp. " Whether it's learning about vermiculture (worms!), concocting an edible soil snack, making a kite to learn about how seeds travel, pouring beeswax candles with a local beekeeper, or building a solar oven, kids will have the chance to get their hands dirty..."

4) Plantation Farm Camp in Sonoma. "Being on a real, working farm means you will have the chance to work with animals everyday and learn how to take care of them. This isn't a petting zoo -- you will really milk the cow, feed the chickens, and help shear the sheep."

5) Slide Ranch Summer Day Camp Muir Beach. "Campers are encouraged to touch, taste, smell, hear, observe, and ask questions. We focus on teaching respect for animals, plants, the earth and each other."
