Animated Film Characters on The Hollywood Walk of Fame

Classic Cartoon Film, Television and Book Characters with Stars on the Walk of Fame ....

Mickey Mouse, Snow White, Bugs Bunny : Cartoon Costumes

Consider the stars in Hollywood Walk of Fame. As of the writing of this page the only cartoon/animated characters with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame are Tinker Bell, Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, The Rugrats, Shrek, The Simpsons, Snow White, Winnie the Pooh and Woody Woodpecker.

If you're on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood you may be surprised to see Mickey Mouse. Maybe even more surprised to see The Simpsons! Walk of fame cartoon? These characters would be most well-known in animated form though they may be seen in live-action once in a while as well. Included you'll find the Hollywood Walk of Fame address for each star.

With the recent releases of Snow White inspired feature films Mirror Mirror with Julia Roberts and Snow White and the Huntsman with Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, will Snow White and movie-inspired costumes be hot this Halloween? Through it all, Princesses will always be very popular costumes for young and old. Make the costumes your own. Learn the stories, the backstories.

I have a separate page, currently being updated celebrating the animals with stars on the Walk of Fame. That page also talks about other animal characters with stars featured on another page. Those stars belong to famous dogs, Rin Tin Tin, Strongheart and Lassie. Also included on that page are Godzilla and Muppets Kermit the Frog and Big Bird.

These aren't best known as being animated though they may be seen on film or TV in animated form sometimes. The characters are Godzilla, Kermit the Frog and Big Bird.

One Walk of Fame star is inscribed Charlie Tuna. This is in honor of the long-time radio personality, whose real name is Art Ferguson, not the animated advertising mascot.

~ Mickey Mouse ~

6925 Hollywood Blvd.

The anthropomorphic mouse has evolved from being simply a character in animated cartoons and comic strips to become one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. Mickey is currently the main character in the Disney Channel's Playhouse Disney series "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse". Mickey is the leader of The Mickey Mouse Club.

Mickey Mouse (short for Mitchell Mouse) is a cartoon character who has become an icon for the Walt Disney Company. Mickey Mouse was created in 1928 by Walt Disney and UbIwerks and voiced by Walt Disney.

In late 2009, The Walt Disney Company announced that they will begin to re-brand the Mickey Mouse character by moving away from his pleasant, cheerful image and reintroducing the mischievous and cunning side of his personality.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves Forest
Snow White (in German Schneewittchen) is a fairy tale known from many countries in Europe, the best known version being the German one collected by the Brothers Grimm.

The German version features elements such as the magic mirror and the seven dwarfs, who were first given individual names in the 1912 Broadway play Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and then given different names in Disney's 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The story of Snow White and the dwarfs should not be confused with the story of Snow White and Rose Red (in German Schneeweichen und Rosenrot), another fairy tale that was also collected by the Brothers Grimm.

In the Aarne-Thompson folklore classification, tales of this kind are grouped together as type 709, Snow White. Others of this kind include Bella Venezia, Myrsina, Nourie Hadig, The Young Slave and Gold-Tree and Silver-Tree. "The Jealous Sisters" is another Albanian fairy tale. In both fairy tales the death is caused by a ring.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 1937. It was the first full-length animated feature, filmed in Technicolor. A Smile and a Song.

The opening of the 1978 film Grease does a take-off on the animated Disney film, Snow White when it introduces the Olivia Newton John character of Sandy.

In the many non-German versions, the dwarfs are generally robbers, while the magic mirror is a dialog with the sun or moon. In a version from Albania, collected by Johann Georg von Hahn, the main character lives with 40 dragons. Her sleep is caused by a ring. The beginning of the story has a twist, in that a teacher urges the heroine to kill her evil stepmother so that she would take her place. The origin of this tale is debated; it is likely no older than the Middle Ages. In fact there are possibly two Albanian versions of Snow White: one where her stepmother tries to kill her, and another where her two jealous sisters try to kill her.

~ Bugs Bunny ~

Bugs Bunny Cartoon Revue
1963 Poster
April 30, 1938 is said to be the real start of the Bugs Bunny that we know today.
A rabbit with some of the personality of Bugs, though looking very different, first appears in the cartoon short Porky's Hare Hunt, released on April 30, 1938. It was co-directed by Ben "Bugs" Hardaway and an uncredited Cal Dalton (who was responsible for the initial design of the rabbit).

A Wild Hare, directed by Tex Avery and released on July 27, 1940, is widely considered to be the first official Bugs Bunny cartoon. It is the first short where both Elmer Fudd and Bugs are shown in their fully developed forms as hunter and tormentor, respectively; the first in which Mel Blanc uses what would become Bugs' standard voice; and the first in which Bugs uses his catchphrase, "What's up, Doc?"

Bugs Bunny is an American fictional character who starred in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of animated films produced by Leon Schlesinger Productions, which became Warner Bros. Cartoons in 1944. In 2002, he was named by TV Guide as the best cartoon character of all time. Bugs starred in 163 shorts in the Golden Age of American animation, and made cameos in three others along with a few appearances in non-animated films.
-- Wikipedia information on Bugs Bunny

Voices behind Bugs Bunny: When Mel Blanc died in 1989, Jeff Bergman, Joe Alaskey and Billy West, among others, became the new voices of Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes. Here are a few facts on each of these men.
On or around July 30, 2010 Bugs Bunny turned 70 years old!

Knitting behind the scenes turn of the century film stars

Knitting on screen, behind the scenes

Knitting for pleasure, relaxation, for necessity, for victory! Famous knitters
Shirley Mason
included Bette Davis, Ingrid Bergman, Rosalind Russell. Cary Grant had a knitting scene in Mr. Lucky. What others can you name?

June 2015 will mark the 10th anniversary of Knit in Public Day, some celebrate a Knit in Public Week and tweet photos. Fun that it occurs in summertime. Do you participate? Knit all year you don't need an excuse.

Here begins a series of knitting actors and actresses. It opens with the 1910s. Most f these are photos of actresses at home or behind the scenes, publicity stills or in early publications.

Shirley Mason made her film debut at the age of ten in the 1910 film A Christmas Carol.

Actor Marc McDermott played Ebenezer Scrooge. Was this the first film version to the Charles Dickens classic?

She appeared in the silent movie, Desert Gold, a lost film that featured William Powell early in his career playing a character with the unpleasant name of Snake Landree.

Shirley Mason's sisters Edna and Virginia (better known as Viola Dana) were also actresses. The photo of Mason above is from 1917.

Marguerite Clark
Marguerite Clark was a top box office draw and worked alongside big stars such as John Gilbert, John Barrymore and Harrison Ford.

Clark was one of the first female film directors. Many of her films are now considered to be lost.

She starred in a 1916 silent version of Snow White. Creighton Hale was Prince Florimond and Lionel Braham was Berthold, the Huntsman.

The 1917 photo at left said this young Lasky studio actress had only one arm but she was doing her bit for the war effort.

Encouraging her was fellow actress (and knitter), Mary Pickford.

Baby Marie Osborne with her mother 1918

A 1918 image of Baby Marie Osborne knitting with her mother. Born in Denver, CO, the story of how the young star became the foster daughter and then the daughter of the Osborne couple is disputed.

Child stars were big business and brought lots of money to the studios and to their guardians in those days as there were no real laws protecting their incomes.

Baby Osborne was a goldmine for the studio. She earned $300-per-week. The average annual salary in the United States was $750.

Balboa president Herbert Horkheimer issued a proclamation of Rules to be observed in regard to Little Mary Sunshine, which was handed out to all involved in filming her movies. Among the rules were:

* She is not to be teased at any time
* She is not to be shouted at or addressed in slang
* She is not to be given sweetmeats nor presents of any description while at work on the stage or on location. All presents must be sent to her dressing room or left at the general offices of the studio.
* Threatening or addressing the baby star in loud or unseemly language or using objectionable language in her presence shall be cause for instant dismissal.
* She is not to be coddled nor handled unnecessarily. You must adore her from afar.

Anna Little knits between scenes
Actress Anna aka Ann Little was especially popular in Westerns and her films with Wallace Reid.

After retiring from movies in the 1930s, she managed the Chateau Marmont Hotel on the Sunset Strip.

She's not to be confused with Little Ann Little who was 4'11" tall and provided the voice for the Betty Boop cartoon character.

Chester Conklin learning to knit,
Louise Fazenda knits (right)
Louise Fazenda made nearly 300 films, beginning in the silent era. On Thanksgiving Day 1927, she married famous Warner Brothers' producer Hal B. Wallis. He was the producer of iconic films such as Casablanca. The other actresses in this photo were not identified.

Beatrice Lillie, Louise Fazenda, Frank Fay & Lloyd Hamilton in Recitations from The Show of Shows, the "all talking Vitaphone production" full of Warner Brothers stars from 1929.

June Caprice 1917

June Caprice worked in silent films as a character actress for the Fox Corporation. She also appeared on calendars for the Coca-Cola company. She married film director Harry F. Millarde. They had a daughter, June Millarde (an actress and model) who also went by the name Toni Seven.

According to Wikipedia, in 1949, U.S. Senator Warren G. Magnuson was described as the most eligible bachelor in the United States Capitol.

June Caprice's daughter Toni Seven was linked romantically with the senator. She is featured in a book, Warren G. Magnuson and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century America.

Enid Bennett 1919
In 1918 Enid Bennett became the second wife of director Fred Niblo. He'd previously been married to actress Josephine Cohan, who was the mother of Fred Niblo, Jr.

Josephine Cohan Niblo, sister of George M. Cohan and member of The Four Cohans, died from heart disease at an early age.

Actress Enid Bennett played Lady Marian Fitzwalter the 1922 film Robin Hood with Douglas Fairbanks and Wallace Beery.

10 reasons movie box office numbers are down

What's wrong with the movies?
10 things to fix to bring back the audiences

Ticket sales, admission to movies is down. In January 2015 Variety ran a story,
Box Office Drops 5% in 2014: What’s Behind the Fall. "Audiences cooled to Hollywood offerings, voting with their feet as attendance dropped by an estimated 6% to 1.26 billion, the lowest figure in nearly two decades." You'll find similar articles in Forbes, The Hollywood Reporter, USA Today, other periodicals and their corresponding web sites.

People aren't so happy with the films they're seeing. What can new filmmakers, indie film-makers, screenwriters, actors and producers take away from the remarks of the film-going public to consider when crafting your next film? What's the goal? An award, a blockbuster? Who is your audience?

Here are comments from movie patrons, problems they see in movies and reasons for the slump in attendance.

1) People want more true characters and genuine humor. True reflections of human life.

"They are tired of seeing themselves ridiculed and burlesqued.  If the public grows weary of motion pictures it will be for the reason that they do not appeal to the best in us. We prefer to laugh with not at the screen characters. Fewer imitations of hits."

People in Jack-in-the-Box costumes hand out candy
2) Predictability of plots, themes. "Continued foisting upon audiences of threadbare and ill-chosen plots which would in story form be rejected by almost any magazine. ... Old tricks are resorted to, logical outcomes distorted.  ...

"What fun is there in going to pictures when you know in the first five minutes not only how the story will end but all the phases  through which it will pass before reaching that end?

"When you can shut your eyes and see how the hero and heroine will look and when, if you were not too self-conscious, you could give beforehand a demonstration of their reactions to all emotions brought into play?"

3) Poor quality of films, over-sentimentality. Movies that underrate the intelligence of the audience. "Bad stories, shallowness of theme, sameness, standardized movie stories. People have seen too many good films to like the crude, disjointed, falsely sentimental films."

4) Need substance over thrills and effects. "Want more true characterizations and genuine humor. True reflections of human life rather than sensations, thrills and effects.

"People cannot react forever to thrills. Something else is needed, something built on the deeper desires of human nature. As a child outgrows the merry-go-round, so does the adult. With movie vision matured, reject that which only thrills for that which satisfies."

Lance Out Loud
Includes moving essays by his family,

The Loud Family
TV's first Reality Show?
5) "The public is to blame for much of the trash that is being foisted upon it. The producers know the wants of the paying public and play up to their demands. The masses refuse to think therefore have not learned as yet to discriminate and the result is obvious."

Movie makers appeal to the masses, to their pocketbooks.

6) Unemployment. People can't afford luxuries like going to the movies, going out to dinner. People can remember when a whole family could afford to go to the movies. Now you're more likely to find another type of entertainment or see a movie in a different venue where admission is cheaper.

7) High admission charges. Pair this with the fact that so many people are either unemployed of dealing with pay cuts, additional expenses associated with going to a movie, babysitter, gas prices, maybe a meal or theater refreshments.

"The people of my town have been disappointed too many times by High priced pictures when they were no better than the one the previous night for half the price. The much advertised stars or at least many of them do not earn the high salaries they receive and for which the public must pay."

8) Hollywood Scandal. "Newspapers delight in publishing stories and statements detrimental to the characters of our favorite friends of the screen causing some
patrons to become disgusted. ...
Gloria Swanson William Holden
Sunset Boulevard 8x10"

"The fierce light of publicity that is brought to bear on the frailties of movie folks, following the recent scandals and the affection and regard felt by the public for their heroes and heroines cooled markedly. ...

"Tales of scandals of people in motion pictures, elevation to stardom of some men and women obviously unprepared by either training or experience for such positions."

9) Competition from other media. Movies aren't the only leisure activity
We can stream movies on TV,
project them outdoors
available.

10) The unrest and dissatisfaction in the world today is affecting pictures. "When the soul is not at peace with itself everything is wrong. If the public knows not what it wants how can the producer know? ...

"The public really wants truth at any cost, though it doesn't know it. It is tired of extravagances, popular actors, improbable situations. It seems to me in the effort to please everything has been overdone made unreal and unconvincing."

Some say that film-making is a business vs. an art. Do you agree, disagree or think it's impossible to make such an apples and oranges statement?

As you may have guessed these excerpts are not from a contemporary source. They're comments made from movie fans over 90 years ago. These come from a 1922 Photoplay magazine. "The public diagnoses the illness in the motion picture theater box office and prescribes remedies."

A contest was run for film buffs, if that term may be used for moviegoers and readers of movie industry & fan magazines of that era. The contest asked people to write editorials which were perhaps the closest thing 1922 had to blog posts. It was a way for the public to get their voices heard.

Radio was competing with movies in 1922. Radio provided more than music, there were dramas and comedies, serialized programs featuring film stars which aired on a regular basis. This was partly to publicize the movies of course.

There were game shows and in-depth news programs, soap operas, sports and children's programs. Fans could see some movies for a cheaper price in schools and churches.

They would later say television killed the movies, the internet killed print media, altered the way we watch television.... We're seeing a resurgence of vinyl LPs though. The good old typewriter is still out there.

There will always be competition. There will always be a struggle to create good stories and a struggle to get stories produced.  Give the public what they want? What do you think?

Decor tips to Personalize your home

Here are some ideas for your home using the wonderful red-haired actress Maureen O'Hara as an example. If you're a redhead, this article is especially for you. Just like fashion, your home can complement your look.

O'Hara
Maureen O'Hara 24x36 Poster
was born in Ireland. She's known for standout performances in famous swashbuckling films with actors such as Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power and Charles Laughton.

She starred in Miracle on 34th Street, How Green Was My Valley, Jamaica Inn. Too many fine films to count. In 1991 she appeared in Only the Lonely with John Candy.

A few magazine articles dated 1941-1956 either described and/or included photographs of Miss O'Hara's home. She was married to Will Price 1941-1953. He was from Mississippi. Their daughter, Bronwyn was born in 1944 and I believe that the family moved at least once during this time period. She has a fun, dynamic personality and she updated her decor when she pleased.

Her home wasn't midcentury modern with retro furniture -- her homes were actually mid-century. These stars can give you ideas for your home.

In 1941, she talks about furnishing a home as a new bride, mentioning an assortment of possible creative Irish gifts of the era. "Every Irish bride starts out with twelve apostle spoons one each having a figure of an apostle on its handle. At a high tea you put a spoon in each saucer. But you can't get them over here."

Ancestry, Heritage: Celebrate yours, your partner's. How are they similar, different?

Miss O'Hara is very proud of her Irish heritage. She displays not only the flag in her home, but when St. Patrick's Day rolls around she celebrates with a feast and a big party. She remembered superstitions from the old country.

Heirlooms: Recognize your own family's history

There's more to your environment than what we readily see. The fire, the music, the mood. Making people comfortable.

Because it got cold at night in California, they had their open porch aka their lanai, enclosed with glass and then furnished. Don't let space go unused or rarely used.

"One day I was rummaging around the storage basement and I came across four solid bedposts and a needlepoint bench that Will has picked up in a Mississippi antique shop. My first impulse was to use them with their mahogany finish. But Will didn't like it, so I had them painted green!" (1949)

Colors are very important
O'Hara is a redhead.  Why do redheads look so great in green?

Because green and red are true complementary colors, hues that lie on opposite ends of the spectrum, notes George Brescia in the book, Change Your Clothes, Change Your Life: Because You Can't Go Naked.

When looking at color charts, planning furniture placement, considering paints, wall coverings, etc for your home, don't forget to think about what will suit you best, too.

"When Maureen wears a hostess gown to one of her own dinner parties she makes sure that it blends with the green. Many actresses, in fact, know the trick of matching their clothes to their environment."

Film art directors and set designers would probably tell you that they take their lead actors into consideration when staging the sets.
1956 Miss O'Hara bedroom
Just as you dress to complement your complexion, eye color and figure you are the jewel and your home is your environment. The same theories can be used to accent your house whether it's the paint/wall coverings, furniture and accent pieces.

A 1956 article about the now-single O'Hara shows a couple of photos of her bedroom. The bed is different but similar. The room appears to be a brighter shade of green but there's no way to tell considering how old photos, scans and then reproductions on different screens can be misleading.

In 1948, Jeanette MacDonald and husband, Gene Raymond had a green living room. McDonald was also known for her red hair.
