10 Famous TV Dads: Gomez Addams : Costume Ideas

He's dashing and rich, a devoted husband and father. Gomez Addams is the patriarch of a family that, while maybe creepy and kooky, has been a television hit since its debut September 18, 1964. Happy Anniversary to The Addams Family!

This costume, whether alone, half of a gorgeous couples costume with the glorious Morticia Addams, or part of a knock-out group costume, will please the crowd.

Include their children, Pugsley and Wednesday Addams, Grandma and Uncle Fester. Lurch (was he a Zombie or what?) & Cousin Itt. Don't forget Thing.

Based primarily on the television program, Gomez was a businessman, a billionaire in fact.  He is an acrobat, juggler, knife-thrower, cigar smoker and a lawyer.

According to Wikipedia, Charles Addams worked with John Astin on development of the character. There wasn't a first name. "When the 1964 television series The Addams Family was being developed, Charles Addams suggested naming the character either Repelli or Gomez. Addams left the final choice up to portrayer, John Astin, who chose Gomez."

These days lots of the iconic costumes, Snow White for instance, come in dark or goth versions, especially once you hit the tween sizes and older. Not so with Addams Family costumes! The members of this family were lovers not fighters and yet, they were goth all over from the start. ;-)

The Addams Family Gomez Adams Adult Costume shown above is a good starting place to take on the Gomez persona. It includes the jacket with shirt front, bow tie & pants. The Gothic Gentleman Suit Costume is a grey pinstriped suit, including a jacket, pants, tie, even the moustache!

Please remember to check for adhesive or Spirit Gum & Remover Combo if you're getting a costume mustache or beard! Is it self-stick, one use only, etc? Unless you're getting a Moustache on a Stick, you may end up with a problem if you can't stick your mustache on! Same goes for some of the other things like beards, fake noses, moles, pointy Spock/Elf ears and more.

You may choose other props. A fake cigar? He would practice fencing with Lurch. A foil or rapier? Maybe a stack of cash or walking stick? Do you think Gomez was one of the best tv dads?

Certainly having the lovely Morticia by his side would be his preference. Find a variety of costume and wig choices for her to wear. The Mysterious Mistress Gothic Gown Costume (right) is just one.

Gomez was into yoga and he was a philanthropist. He and his family accepted people as they were. They had exotic pets including some who were on the border between plant and animal! "Don't gulp your food, Darling!"

The Addams Family Musical played on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre opening in April 2010. That production closed December of 2011. When the show opened, Gomez and Morticia were played by Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. At the end of its run, they were played by Roter Rees and Brooke Shields. The show continues to tour.
