Knit with Joan Crawford Star Inspiration

Knitting with the stars

Do you share a hobby with a favorite celebrity? I'd like to put a photo of a favorite person or character on a bag I take when I'm traveling, when we're making jewelry at a friend's house, taking photos, whatever we're doing. It's the cross-collectible route and a real conversation piece.

This is something I thought of for a close friend who knits and loves classic movies. She brings her yarn, needles, her tablet (computer :)) and other accessories with her when on the go. I could add her name or a movie quote that I know she likes.... Her very favorite actress is Joan Crawford.

"Her lovely pink-and-white afghan is an Alice Maynard design and the Alice Maynard shop is one of the oldest and most exclusive needlework shops in New York, with some of the most beautiful designs you've ever seen, not only in knitted and crocheted items, but in needlepoint and crewel as well. The shop is located on Madison Avenue which is loaded with elegant and expensive shops...."

"... Women who love fine needlework are the same friendly and helpful souls the world over, whether they are in sophisticated New York or casual Kansas. A charming Cuban lady, Miss Otilia Ruz, worked out the instructions for Joan Crawford's afghan, so we could bring them to you."

Newspaper feature Fan knits sweater for Joan Crawford 1937
The Evening Independent, December 16, 1937
A fan of Joan Crawford's decided to make "the young actress a sweater. Her plan was to knit 1000 stitches for every picture Miss Crawford made. The sweater required 26,000 stitches so, after seeing The Bride Wore Red last week, Miss Violet put on the last 1000 stitches and sent the garment."

"The main attraction here [Alice Maynard Yarn Shop] unquestionably is Otilia Ruz, resident at Maynard since she emigrated from Cuba in 1968. Otilia is reputed to be New York's best knitting instructor.

"She is delightful and patient. (These are not qualities, alas, among the instructors who work out of local yarn shops. Many other store teachers - and sometimes sales staff - have reputations for gruffness and impatience.) She provides custom pattern instructions for suits, her specialty, or any other knitted garment." ...
-- excerpt from New York Magazine January 26, 1981

A reassuring note

More tips from Ms. Crawford via the Lady's Circle Magazine....

"Joan has often told me she cannot understand women who rule out any experience or emotion likely to bring wrinkles. 'That isn't for me! I don't want to look as if I'd been punished by life, but I do want to look as if I'd lived.'

"She repeats this thinking in her book, The Way I Live (a.k.a. My Way of Life), Joan Crawford writing: 'All my nostalgia is for tomorrow, not for any yesterdays...There's nothing I regret or would change. If it hadn't been for the pain I wouldn't be me. I like very much being me.'"

Movie Trains, Travel with Powell Loy Grant and Saint

Trains in Movies
Alfred Hitchcock on Trains

The train figures in
Nick and Nora Charles
let Asta sleep upstairs
prominently in Alfred Hitchcock films such as Shadow of a Doubt, North by Northwest, Number Seventeen, The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes and of course Stranger on a Train.
It's a favorite of his motifs.

A couple of famous Train movies include the 1940 British thriller Night Train to Munich starring Margaret Lockwood, Rex Harrison and Paul Henreid.

Buster Keaton's The General, a silent from 1927. It's very impressive when you consider all he accomplished in that movie and when it was created.

May 10 is National Train Day and a good time to think about favorite films that feature trains. They're fun means of travel from one place to another. They can be symbolic. Train travel is a good example of the Slow Movement, slow food, slow art, etc.

It gives the family a chance to relax, enjoy life and enjoy one another. You can find a group of new friends and strike up a chorus of The Man on the Flying Trapeze like Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable did on their bus trip in It Happened One Night.

If you want a total springtime Hitchcock experience, May 10 is also Windmill Day. Watch Foreign Correspondent with its iconic windmill scene. And then maybe treat the family to some miniature golf? :)

"A train may be an old fashioned way to travel, but an upper berth may be a wonderful way to go .... when it's your time to go."

Have you seen The Thin Man, the movie that started the William Powell/Myrna Loy franchise in 1934? The film was made in a matter of weeks in mid-1934, the year famous for ushering in the Production Code.

Directors, writers and actors became very adept at using symbolism in their dialogue and imagery to alert the viewers to what was going on.

The Thin Man William Powell Myrna Loy
Playing with baby & train

When the film ends, Nick and Nora Charles are headed by train from New York to San Francisco. They let their famous dog Asta have the upper bunk while the two of them take the lower.

The terrier puts a paw over his eyes as the camera fades out. We hear San Francisco, Here I Come as the train winds its way into a tunnel.

We would see Nick and Nora (and other couples) sleeping in separate beds. This didn't stop the pair from producing Nick Jr. of course.

California Here We Come, The Thin Man 1934

Myrna Loy and William Powell made six Thin Man films together, but they made fourteen movies together in all.

Christmas 1940 William Powell gets trains from his wife and friend Myrna Loy
Christmas 1940
Train enthusiast William Powell

and friend Myrna Loy

In 1959, Hitchcock gave Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint the same train into a tunnel treat in North by Northwest. This couple received no high-spirited, pointed musical accompaniment on their journey.

In the post-Code dialogue, particularly the conversation in screwball comedies, the erotic is ambiguous. Like poets who find rewards in writing in the
4-Tone Pinewood
Train Whistle

For the theme birthday,
performance, playtime
forms (such as the sonnet) some filmmakers and screenwriters found rewards in the imposed restrictions.

Working within them, getting around them, compromise, restraint and risk. It was time to pull out creativity you didn't know you had.

As they say, sensitive viewers congratulate themselves for finding the forbidden just beneath the surface.

We listened for the suggestive, double entendres, innuendo. This is similar to an audience member at a Shakespeare play or movie who "gets" the language.

For modern audiences, the more the viewer knows about the time a film was made, the more we can appreciate it. Who was their intended audience and why?

Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in North by Northwest

Stuck within the confines of a train, in The 39 Steps and North by Northwest, main characters are being pursued for crimes they didn't commit.

Another pre-Code film is Shanghai Express is a (1932) with Marlene Dietrich, Clive Brook, Anna May Wong and Warner Oland.

What are your favorite movies with trains in them?

The Joe DiMaggio Show featured a segment about Lionel Trains. What a special Christmas gift. A lot of families still put trains under the Christmas tree or in their holiday display each year. Watch The Polar Express with the whole family.

Films featuring train scenes:

Twentieth Century (1934) with John Barrymore and Carole Lombard. Not all train movies are capers, crime dramas, thrillers, races or suspense films. This is a favorite screwball comedy from the golden age.

The Palm Beach Story (1942) with Claudette Colbert, Joel McCrea, Mary Astor and Rudy Vallée.

British 1965 Doctor Zhivago starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. It is directed by David Lean.

Thinking of 'Train' as a verb? How about watching a movie like How to Train your Dragon? Could you train an animal like a dragon? Could you herd cats?

Vertigo film premiere anniversary Alfred Hitchcock

Hold on! It's the anniversary of the
Vertigo film premiere

Alfred Hitchcock's film Vertigo premiered in San Francisco on May 9, 1958
Alfred Hitchcock
Classic Horror Silhouette Tee
at the Stage Door Theatre, a historical landmark built in the 1890s. It's now the Ruby Skye nightclub.

The movie, starring James Stewart, Kim Novak and Barbara Bel Geddes is famously set in San Francisco.

You can take walking tours to many of the locations seen in the movie. Take a drive to Bodega Bay and see where they filmed The Birds.

In Vertigo Jimmy Stewart was John Scottie Ferguson

Kim Novak played Madeleine Elster and Judy Barton

Barbara Bel Geddes was Midge Wood

Ellen Corby appears as the hotel owner. Some TV fan in the room always says, "That's Grandma from The Waltons!"

The Ford Motor Company supplied a well-preserved green paint sample for a car used in the film. As the use of the color green in the film has artistic importance, matching a shade of green was a stroke of luck for restoration and provided a reference shade from which to work.
-- some information from Vertigo: The Making of a Hitchcock Classic by Dan Auiler

The color green is important throughout the film, for instance in costume, the color of the car and lighting. On May 24, 1991 Thelma and Louise is released. The film featured in a vintage 1966 green Ford Thunderbird convertible. The film
starred Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis.

Want to go to the other side and be like Benjamin in The Graduate? He drove a red 1966 Alfa Romeo Series 1 Spider 1600 also known as the Duetto, a car sometimes given the nickname Osso di Seppia. December 21, 1967 it had premieres in New York and Los Angeles with the general release of The Graduate also starring Anne Bancroft and Katharine Ross on December 22nd. Okay, maybe a classic car is a little more than most of us can afford.

You can stream the movie from Amazon Vertigo 1958 (rent or buy). Buy the film alone or as part of a set of Hitchcock's best movies.

Alfred Hitchcock cameos: Musical

* He has one of those cameos involving a musical instrument/instrument case in Vertigo. He's carrying a trumpet case.

* In 1947's The Paradine Case, Mr. Hitchcock is seen leaving the train at Cumberland Station, carrying a cello case.

* In Strangers on a Train (1951) now he is boarding a train with a double bass as Farley Granger is leaving the train.

The song Dizzy originally performed by Tommy Roe, was a hit in 1969. James Stewart had trouble with dizziness in Vertigo. Would a clock like this one encourage or discourage clock watching? They have this design and ones like it on lots of other products: Hypnosis Spiral Clothing, Computer Accessories, Customize

Vertigo is significant, partly in that it's one of Hitchcock's films featuring a female main character who wears glasses but is not psychologically damaged or threatening.

To celebrate the anniversary you might want to decorate your home and yourself with custom Vertigo and Hitchcock paraphernalia. Which of his films is your favorite and why? Give that movie buff a gift, customize some shirts for your group or get a present for yourself.

Spellbound; inspired by Salvador Dali. The 1945 film stars Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck, Michael Chekhov and Leo G. Carroll.

If you're a Foreign Correspondent, you can bring your work along with you in style.

Leo G. Carroll is mentioned in the Science Fiction/Double Feature song from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. So is Claude Rains, who not only appeared in the famous Hitchcock film, Notorious with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman but made appearances on his television show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

"Michael Rennie was ill
The Day the Earth Stood Still
But he told us where we stand
And Flash Gordon was there
In silver underwear
Claude Rains was The Invisible Man..."

"I knew Leo G. Carroll
Was over a barrel
When Tarantula took to the hills..."

The 39 Steps came out in 1935, starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

Do you think Hitchcock is Number One?? Are you a doctor or Chemistry major?

We got this Hitchcock jacket for walks, etc. It's good quality and the design is nice. On this black jacket the color is a little more brick red than bright red.
** On most shirts the design would be large and centered. Nice to have the option.

Contemporary Pop Rock Country Memorial Songs

Pop, Rock & Country Memorial Songs
Many of the songs written within the past 50 years

Judy Garland
Little Liza Minnelli
Mickey Rooney
Hollywood Movie Star photo
Songs for Memorials and Tributes, Make it personal for the individual. Maybe you just want to listen to some songs because it's someone's birthday or the anniversary of a day that you lost someone special.

The older we've gotten the more often we've been involved in planning remembrances.

Sometimes we can't think of what to say, can't think of a song. Several of these songs memorialize and celebrate the people's lives.

Is this for a soldier, a family member, was it a sudden death, the death of a child, your partner?
Inspiration from: Paul McCartney, the members of Monty Python, the friends and colleagues of Jim Henson, more.

Will it be an indoor/outdoor service?

Songs written for...
  • Losing a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend
  • Loss of a child, miscarriage
  • Saluting a hero, soldier
  • Following sudden deaths, losing someone unexpectedly
  • Paul McCartney sings for John Lennon
  • Memorial services of prominent people such as Jim Henson and Graham Chapman of Monty Python
  • Judy Garland sings Battle Hymn of the Republic honoring President Kennedy 1963
  • There's a link to main page with ideas, examples and lists of songs
Seek help from films and movie soundtracks. Think of favorite movies that have the tone you’re looking for if you need help choosing a song. If you want something that will be meaningful to children, several Disney films incorporate separation, loss of a partner, family member, friend and/or a pet. Are there familiar songs in those movies?

Loss of a Parent, Grandparent:

Me and the Wildwood Rose, Carlene Carter 1990 (Written about the death of her grandmother, Maybelle Carter)

Tears in the Holston River, Johnny Cash (Written about the death of Mother Maybelle Carter)

Silent House, Dixie Chicks

Little Willow, Paul McCartney written upon the death of Ringo Starr's first wife, Maureen, who died of cancer. The song was to be a comfort to their children.

Dance With My Father, Luther Vandross

Baby Girl Window, Robbie Williams (was inspired by Samantha Beckinsale and her late father, actor Richard Beckinsale):
excerpt:
I wish you would stay to see what she made of herself
People say you were gone too soon
I see your face when flowers bloom
Through her window
Your baby girl's window

Family Reserve, Lyle Lovett (mentions family and friends)

At the funeral of actress Jean Harlow in June 1937,
Jeanette MacDonald sang The Indian Love Call and
Nelson Eddy sang Ah Sweet Mystery of Life. An organ played Tchaikovsky's None but the Lonely Heart.

Jean Harlow 11x14" Photo Print

Losing Children, Miscarriage:

Tears In Heaven, Eric Clapton: The song was written about the pain and loss felt following the death of his four-year-old son, Conor.

I Give You to His Heart, Alison Krauss

Spark, Tori Amos wrote this following a tragic miscarriage

Saluting a hero, a soldier:

Just A Dream, Carrie Underwood, A wife losing her soldier husband, lost chance to grow old together

If You’re Reading This, Tim McGraw, A letter from a soldier to his (pregnant) wife. She’s reading it after he’s died.

A friend went to a memorial service not long ago and was faced with walking on grass in her high heeled shoes. I'd read about these high heel covers. People like them for weddings and picnics. How about other outdoor events. Many of them come with little pouches to carry them in your purse.

Heels Above High Heel Protector 4 Pack- Clear Heels Above is just one version of high heel protector that's on the market. There are others like Starlettos Crystal High Heel Protectors.

Young@Heart "Wish You Were Here" Pink Floyd

Songs following sudden deaths, losing someone unexpectedly:

* Wish You Were Here, Mark Wills Deals with the issue of Sudden Death
In this case tells the story of a plane crash, the husband who died is talking to and comforting his wife who survives him.

excerpt:
Wish you were here, wish you could see this place
Wish you were near, I wish I could touch your face
The weather's nice, it's paradise
It's summertime all year and there's some folks we know
They say, Hello. I miss you so, wish you were here.

Reba McEntire dedicated her album, For My Broken Heart, to her road band, most of whom had been killed in an airplane crash.

Songs include If I Had Only Known, All Dressed Up (with Nowhere to Go) and The Greatest Man I Never Knew. Songs are about many life changes, losing parents, aging, family relationships in general. It is a thoughtful, heartbreaking collection of songs but you may have a good cry.

For much more:
There are more songs and ideas at the main page:

Tributes, Choosing Songs for Events, Remembering Loved Ones, Heroes; Memorials at Weddings, Family Gatherings

We've had the unfortunate experience of having to help plan memorial services suddenly and we've planned them under other circumstances. You want to do right by the individual and everyone is different. There is likely to be a variety of people at a memorial service.

The Beatles getting their hair done

Make it Personal: Big Bird sang at Jim Henson's Memorial Service. Are there favorite songs, songs associated with the person, songs sung by the person you can play on video or audio? Including something uplifting and light, reminiscent of the person's sense of humor may be appropriate.

We have friends who have more than one memorial with different groups of family and friends. That way you can have a different kind of tribute at different times and different locations.

Here's a short selection of songs that have been sung live at services and/or used for video montages:

* In the Embers, Sleeping at Last
* Before You Go, OK Sweetheart
* Wait, M83
* I Will Remember You, Sarah McLachlan
* Press On, Robinella
* To Live Is To Fly, Townes Van Zandt
* All I Want by Kodaline
* Headlights, Sophie Hunger
* The Dance, Garth Brooks
* The Cowboy Rides Away, George Strait
* Goodbye, Alabama
* Slipping Away, Max Merritt
* What I Already Know, Point of Grace
* Somewhere Over the Rainbow
* He Stopped Loving Her Today, Alan Jackson sang at memorial for George Jones

We can be inspired by the ideas of artists, maybe choose something written by / for songwriters and singers we admire. The song(s) and tone should be appropriate to the person and your relationship.

At Graham Chapman's Memorial Service in December 1989, fellow Monty Python cast-mates and other friends sang, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. John Cleese delivered a eulogy. (see video below)

Paul McCartney and John Lennon met over 55 years ago. Are you a Beatles fan?...

Here Today
Lyrics excerpts below...

And if I say I really knew you well
what would your answer be
if you were here today

Ooh- Ooh- Ooh- here today
well knowing you,
you’d probably laugh and say that we were worlds apart
if you were here today
Ooh- Ooh- Ooh- here today

But as for me,
I still remember how it was before
and I am holding back the tears no more
Ooh- Ooh- Ooh- I love lou, Ooh ….

Didn’t understand a thing
but we could always sing …..
And if I say I really loved you
and was glad you came along

If you were here today
Ooh- Ooh- Ooh- for you were in my song
Ooh- Ooh- Ooh- Here Today

Coronation Street actress, Betty Driver had pre-planned much of her own service. It included playing a recording of her singing a song herself at a certain point. The song got a standing ovation.

The memorial for legendary puppeteer, film director, writer and producer Jim Henson is inspirational. Song choices were beautiful. May 21, 1990.

The Muppet films have a loyal following as do other Henson film projects such as The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. What an amazingly talented man, family and organization. Jim Henson's Creature Shop is now on the SyFy channel.

* When The River Meets the Sea, John Denver
* Bring Him Home from Les Miserables Turn the World Around, Harry Belafonte * The Rainbow Connection; audio recording of Jim Henson's was played
* It's not easy bein' green (Kermit the Frog, The Muppets)

Just One Person (Sesame Street
song)
excerpt:

If just one person believes in you,
Deep enough, and strong enough, believes in you...
Hard enough, and long enough,
It stands to reason, that someone else will think
"If he can do it, I can do it."

At Graham Chapman’s Memorial Service in December 1989, Monty Python cast-mates and other friends sang, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam.

John Cleese and Michael Palin spoke at the memorial for fellow Monty Python member Graham Chapman
